McGraw-Hill's GED w/ CD-ROM: The Most Complete and Reliable Study Program for the GED Tests

I am a vocational counselor helping adults return to school to learn a new career. Most have been out of school for 10-30 years. This tool helps them recover years of ability lost to non-use, but most especially to score much higher on their entrance exams to the colleges, which greatly reduce the number of remedial classes they have to take to bring their skills up enough to enter a degree program. In addition, those that dropped out of High School have been able to get their GED within as little as a week, or the time it takes to get scheduled into the local testing center (usually at your local Community College). It has been the single most important resource for nearly every student I have, and has proven its worth time and time again. You cannot lose with this one!

I bought the McGraw-Hill GED text for my 17 year old child. We decided that it was best for her to get a GED rather than through the traditional method of attending high school for reasons unrelated to this review.

When the book arrived, I was a bit taken aback by this sheer size of it and somewhat concerned that my child would also be alarmed. However, upon reading through the text, I found it very straight forward and easy to follow. We review the chapters together and have set a goal of 2 full chapters per week - there are 30 individual chapters.

In addition, I purchased the text with the optional CD ROM. It contains sample tests which can be taken either at your leisure or using the exam's timer. The sample tests appear somewhat similar in format as well as difficulty to what I took completing my CLEP exams (I'm not sure if that means colleges have been dumbed down or that students are smarter). At the very least, the practice exam format should be good practice for taking this style of exam in the GED (and later in the CLEP exams).

While my child has not taken the GED exam to date, she has studied the text and taken the sample exams on her own which seems to be instilling some new-found confidence in her academic abilities.

For the sheer volume and information, the text is a very good bargain. The chapters are short, well written, and to the point, which make it better for the student who may have difficulties spending large amounts of time covering the material. Finally, I would advise spending the extra few dollars for the CD ROM when deciding which version to purchase.

This book covers EVERYTHING. But getting it and opening the box was daunting to see the sheer size of the over 1100 page book.
Get the version with the CD-ROM. At the very least you can take the pre tests on the CD-ROM and it tells you in the results exactly where your weaknesses are and which pages of the book to cover. Without it I probably wouldve read the book cover to cover. With it, I found I can pretty much skip the science chapter (I haven't taken the other pre tests yet).
I must say, some of the questions are probably more difficult than what the actual GED asks as Ive had some average friends go in and take the GED without any classes/studying after several years of being out of school and passed.

As a teacher, I appreciate this very effective tool in helping students feel successful. Very well planned, this book maximizes their chances to get through all the material and pass the GED exam.

The book was well written and organized. However the CD was Windows only. We have Macs, and could not use the CD at all. Not good. The info on Amazon did not specify the CD was not cross platform. Please fix this.

all the info you need in one place. they did a great job with the book and at the $20 price it's a steal. you can't go wrong with this one.

This is the one and only book to get to study for a passing GED score!! My son dropped out of school in the eleventh grade because he just couldn't take the bullying anymore. So, I read the reviews on Amazon and ordered it. He studied about 6 mo. and passed with above average scores in all areas but math. However, math has always been a problem subject for him ,but he did pass it. He is now in college and doing well.

This is the second McGraw Hill book I've ordered from Amazon. My son passed the first one on to his buddy which passed as well!! I now home school my other son out (17 Aspergers/Bipolar)of the new one. It really is great.

It's easy to understand for this presentation. I strongly recommend this book to everyone need to have a higher education.

I scored 684 on my GED. I would actually say that the test questions on the book were harder than the actual test.
What is most important when reading the question in this book, and the test itself, especially in "controversial" areas such as social studies etc, is that you can ignore whatever "biases" you have (or perceive the book to have, even though this perception is likely to your own biases) by carefully reading the question and ONLY considering the aspects that the question raises. So take the practice exams on the CD-ROM, read and truly try to understand any questions you might have got wrong, because within the content of the question there should not be many answers assumed incorrectly by McGraw-Hill. I think I counted only couple of question from all of them that had the 'wrong' answer, to best of my knowledge. Still, I think it was a great study book.

This GED book is everything I expected it to be. It is thorough and the CD that is included is what makes this book work.
