One of the best books you will buy for your home library...,
This review is from: McGuffey's Eclectic Readers/Boxed (Hardcover)
At the end of my daughter's kindergarten class (she was 5) I was told by her school that she would probably start reading in first grade. Half way through first grade, I was told she was a little slow and not picking up things as fast as she could. At this point, I stepped in and taught my daughter to read using "Noah Websters' Blue Backed Speller" and "McGuffey's Readers.""McGuffey's Readers" are a delight. I read the books cover to cover and loved every single story contained therein. These two literary tools [the Readers and the BB Speller] were how America learned to read for 150 years. And after *wasting* 18 months listening to reading "specialists" in public schools, *I* taught my daughter to read in under 6 weeks. She is now a rising 8th grader and a prolific reader. I *highly* recommend McGuffey's Readers for any parent who wants to teach their child to read. It is a book you will keep forever, and it is something to be handed down to your children and their children and on and on. And as a prior reviewer stated, they are a real keyhole peak into a bygone time. Plus, the stories are very moral and leave a strong [good!] impression on young minds.

I received this boxed set when I was 10 years old and I'm now in my 30's and I still read through them. I have a 5 year old that has learned to read from the primer and we both love to take turns reading aloud from the books. I think this collection is a great way to introduce children to literature. The books are classic and timeless and there is nothing wrong with learning some simple wholesome values from the past!

Simple and proven method for teaching proper English.,
This review is from: McGuffey's Eclectic Readers/Boxed (Hardcover)
I bought the boxed set when my daughter was 5. She is now 7 and almost through the second reader. The lessons are simple but thorough. The stories also provide a brief glimpse of a time gone by.

These books are so good it is hard to understand why they aren't used today. The illustrations are charming. There are moral lessons imparted so painlessly during the reading. The vocabulary children learned when these were in use in school will shame today's educators into realizing just how far learning has slipped in the past several decades. All children should be reading these.

Give Your Kids the Gift of Reading,
By
This review is from: McGuffey's Eclectic Readers/Boxed (Hardcover)
I started using these readers with my son when he was halfway through kindergarten. Every few days we sit down for some 1 on 1 time and he reads through a couple of lessons from the readers with me. He's currently halfway through the 4th reader. He's now entering 4th grade and has been told that he's reading at the high school level! I'm using the readers with my daughter too (entering 2nd grade) and she seems to be following in his footsteps. Kids soak up language when they're younger and these readers sure do expose them to a wonderful variety of GOOD vocabulary.

Why these books are a great reading program....,
This review is from: McGuffey's Eclectic Readers/Boxed (Hardcover)
These readers contain excellent content, a phonics approach, and a wide vocabulary. Your child will not only learn to read in an easy step by step phonics approach, they will be taught wholesome moral lessons that help in cultivating the pricipals that produce good charector. Sure, you could read the yellow pages, as one 'specialist' suggested, but why? Early education should center around teaching a child good charector. This not-a-specialist recommends these books for anyone looking for a classic reading program.

Quality Teaching.,

The McGuffey Readers are from a time when parents and teachers had high expectations for children. Children were expected to become proficient in spelling, reading and speech, and morality wasn't subjective. Perhaps a return to the old style wouldn't be so bad... If my wife and I are fortunate enough to have children, these books will definitely be in our repertoire.

I am now 21 and when I was homeschooled these are the books my parents used, they are great! There are values in these books that are not found in the books used in the public school system( I attended public schools as well) and now that my parents are getting back into homeschooling my siblings we can use nothing else but McGuffey's Readers.

Character-building Books,

This review is from: McGuffey's Eclectic Readers/Boxed (Hardcover)
I love McGuffey's readers. I taught my children to read with them. They use the effective phonics method. But more than that, they contain inspiring vignettes that teach virtues and build character in the children who read them. They are a priceless part of your child's character education. I highly recommend them to every loving parent.

Absolutely a wonderful set of books to develop your childs reading skills. We are in the midst of the second book and my child is already making wonderful progress with her reading skills. If the first 2 books are any indication, we have great things to look forward to.
