5.0 out of 5 stars SWEET NOSTALGIA, May 9, 2003
This review is from: The McGuire Sisters - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This CD was a great buy, and worth every dollar spent. I'm saying this for the simple fact that this beautiful music never dies and is more "Golden" as time passes by.

For years I've loved the music of the fifties, and some of it is so hard to get,I'm thankful that Amazon still carries music of these treasured long ago artistes. The tunes are catchy and it is this music which gives me that sweet nostalgia, as it was all I ever heard when I was growing up. Reliving these memories is something too great for words....goosebumps and all.

On this particular CD I also enjoyed "HE" which is a religious one and has been a favourite of mine for years. I recommend this
for all those who love and still enjoy the Olden Goldies. I did.

Heather P. Marshall

5.0 out of 5 stars Harmony at Its Best!, October 24, 2001
This review is from: The McGuire Sisters - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
As a little kid born in the fifties, "Sugartime" was one of the first songs I remember hearing on our radio. I rediscovered the beautiful harmonies of these sisters in the seventies, listening on oldies radio. I owned a couple of their LP's back then, then had a couple of cassettes.

Like another reviewer, the amazing thing about the McGuire sisters' recordings is their fantastic sound quality. These sound so vibrant, so recent on CD! This is remastering at its best. For me, this CD sounds best on my car audio system, so realistic it could be a demo tape.

For my money, this trio is as good as it got in the fifties, embodying the clean, 'American' sound with all its optimism and confidence. Will we ever see this type of aural beauty again? We can only hope. In the meantime, treasure this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Recording Making, May 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The McGuire Sisters - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
The McGuire Sisters made more great records than you might think. The people at Coral understood perfectly the trio's harmonies, inventiveness and ability to do anything from the most dramatic ballad to the nutsiest novelty with style and appeal. Dick Jacobs' orchestrations was the fourth Sister in a way and the ladies usually were recorded in the same place--a temple in New York City with fantastic acoustics. The McGuires approached recordings creatively--they were about much more than hits (their albums prove that). They got out at least four dozen single sides worth hearing--the best of it is all here, beautifully mastered and still great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something Special, October 29, 2004
This review is from: The McGuire Sisters - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I remember the McGuires as a kid in the 50s and hated to admit, especially with the advent of rock and roll out of R & B, that I really liked their songs. My loyalty was rewarded when in 1961 a torch song called "Just For Old Times' Sake" was right up there on the charts with Elvis ("Feel So Bad") and Ricky ("Traveling Man"/"Hello Mary Lou"). It's remained one of my favorite songs since then and I still have the 45 single. Unless you are in a bag, as a later 60s expression goes, and like only a certain genre of music, you'll like this unique set of sisters who were back on the road well into their 50s. Nobody else has quite captured the sound of the McGuires.

I have this CD and I really enjoy listening to the perfect harmony that the McGuires are known for. I remember when they were putting out hit record after hit record in the 1950's and I think anyone who likes to listen to good harmony and good music would like this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three brilliant sisters, October 18, 2004
This review is from: The McGuire Sisters - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Comparisons with other sister groups of the forties are often made, but are meaningless. They may have been influenced by the Andrews, the Boswells, the Dinnings or the Kings, or any number of other sister acts, but their style was very much their own.

The McGuires tackled a diverse range of material, from upbeat swinging song to tender love songs, and from jazz to country songs, yet all done in their trademark style, which was in some ways typical easy listening fifties pop, yet they didn't sound too much like anybody else. Despite the diverse sources of their songs, they all blend together very well.

Their two big #1 hits, Sincerely and Sugar time, are of course included, along with all the other hits that matter. This is a highly entertaining collection of music by three sisters who continued to have hits even after Elvis changed the face of popular music, and gives far more variety than any hits collection.

This is the best! I am from the same town (Miamisburg, Ohio) where the McGuire sisters grew up. I have loved their music for many years. I would love to see new recordings from them. They are a class act -- the greatest harmony.

I was thrilled to hear these lovely songs again, and enjoy the great blending of the McGuire voices. Brought back wonderful memories, and made me feel sad that young people today are missing out on what truly great talent actually is.

The McGuire Sisters' Greatest Hits gives us twelve of their greatest hits, although to be truthful, a solid anthology of The McGuire Sisters would require more than twelve tracks and more than one CD. However, the artwork is good and the quality of the sound reflects an excellent remastering job.

The album ends with their smash hit "Sincerely;" this features the sisters harmonizing so well with a male chorus backup; and it all works very well. The sisters have a clean-but sound to them that is practically irresistible; I love it! "Something's Gotta Give" switches over to a swingin' melody with a big band flavor that can't be beat! The McGuire Sisters swing softly and slowly to make "Something's Gotta Give" a real masterpiece.

"He" has a gorgeous musical arrangement that hints at religious themes; and "Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight" has a great horn arrangement while the three sisters harmonize the way they always could. The McGuire Sisters never sounded better.

"Ev'ry Day Of My Life" has more harmonizing with a sweet arrangement as the sisters pledge to be faithful to and loving toward their one true love; and this works wonders for the ballad. There's also "Sugartime;" this country flavored ballad gets the royal treatment from the McGuire Sisters and the men on backup enhance the ballad greatly.

"May You Always" is an enchanting number featuring the sisters wishing all the best to their beloved; and the album ends beautifully with "Just For Old Time's Sake." They do this last track great and I predict you'll like "Just For Old Times sake" very much.

Other reviewers note that this album shows off how The McGuire Sisters could sing almost any type of song and make it sound beautiful; and these reviewers are right! The McGuire Sisters were blessed with the wonderful, rare talent of being able to deliver many types of ballads and make them all seem magical. I hope many people get this CD and enjoy the magical artistry of the McGuire Sisters.

A wonderful collection. I had my daughter stand by the crib of her infant and played "may you always" A parents prayer. Very moving.
Of course this could also be interpreted as a break-up song or the end of a high school or college career as friends part...but I prefer the "parent prayer" interpretation. Again very moving...
