Book Description

February 1, 2005
Five months ago, SG-5 operative Eli McKenzie was in deep cover in Mexico, infiltrating a Spectra ring that kidnaps young girls and sells them into a life beyond imagining. Not being able to move on the Spectra scum right away was torture for the tough-but-compassionate super spy. But that wasn't the only problem - someone on the inside was slowly poisoning Eli, clouding his judgment and forcing him to make an abrupt trip back to the Smithson Group's headquarters to heal. Now, Eli's ready to return...with a vengeance. It seems his quick departure left a private investigator named Stella Banks in some hot water. Spectra operatives have nabbed the nosy Stella and are awaiting word on how to handle her disposal. Eli knows the only way to save her life and his is to reveal himself to Stella and get her to trust him. Seeing the way Stella takes care of the frightened girls melts Eli's armour, and soon, they find that the best way to survive this brutal assignment is to steal time in each other's arms. It's a bliss Eli's intent on keeping, no matter what he has to do to protect it. Because Eli McKenzie has unfinished business with Spectra - and with the woman who has renewed his heart - and this is one man who always finishes what he starts...

From Booklist

Eli McKenzie was poisoned while trying to infiltrate and shut down Spectra's prostitution operation in the barren Chihuahua desert. Then Stella Banks, the private investigator he finds caged in that same compound when he returns to complete the job, becomes the proverbial thorn in his side as he tries to complete his mission. The time line for rescuing the 24 girls currently warehoused there, and for destroying the compound, is stepped up once it becomes known that Spectra's crime boss will be arriving in two days, and that the operation has been infiltrated. Kent's conclusion to the five-part Smithson Group series is more introspective than the previous tales, and the relationship building is on the sketchy side, relying heavily on guilty consciences and earthily graphic descriptions. However, readers who seek fast-paced adventure with high stakes will enjoy this quick read, and librarians take note: the epilogue reads like a teaser for a sequel series. Lynne Welch

More About the Author

Alison Kent was a born reader, but it wasn't until she reached thirty that she knew she wanted to be a writer when she grew up. Five years later, she made her first sale.

In 1995, she accepted an offer issued by the senior editor of Harlequin Temptation live on the "Isn't It Romantic?" episode of CBS 48 Hours. That book, Call Me, was a Romantic Times finalist for Best First Series Book in 1996.

With her first three Temptations on the shelf, she took a break from writing romance novels and spent a few months living one, finding her own hero and practicing every technique she'd learned from a lifetime of reading the best "how-to" manuals around! And the rest, as they say, is history.

Having over thirty titles contracted or in print, she now writes for both the Harlequin Blaze and Kensington Brava lines. She is also a partner in Access Romance, an online author community (http://www.accessromance.com) and DreamForge Media (http://www.dreamforgemedia.com) as a Website designer.

Alison lives in a Houston, Texas, suburb with her hero, any number of their four vagabond kids, and a dog named Smith. Readers can contact her through her web site at http://www.alisonkent.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another thriller, March 7, 2005

Alison Kent's The McKenzie Artifact grabs you on page one and doesn't let go.

Eli McKenzie's undercover SG-5 agent is trying to stop the selling of young girls by Spectra. A major thorn in his side is PI Stella Banks. Eli was poisoned several months ago and is just now coming back to the rebel camp. He finds Stella being held captive and subjected to the men from the camp. Eli joins forces with Stella to save the girls and to get out alive.

Eli and Stella are a perfect match, both in determination, wits and passion. The McKenzie Artifact is a fast paced story, it's another gem in the SG-5 saga. Though it's a short story it's packed with intrigue, steamy sex and friendship. Everything I look for in an Alison Kent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Grit, February 15, 2005

This review is from: The McKenzie Artifact (Paperback)
I read this book not expecting it to live up to The Beach Alibi, my favorite in this series. It proved me wrong and delivered a healthy wallop; definitely the most earthy, most gritty and the edgiest of this series to date. Eli McKenzie is attempting to rescue young girls who have been kidnapped and are headed for an uncertain future. Stella Banks is on a mission to retrieve the missing daughter of her housekeeper when she herself is taken captive, necessitating Eli's interference with her captors in order to keep her safe. Eli and Stella are naturals together and they go together like a hand and glove, perhaps the most compatible couple in this series. Thankfully there are continuing stories yet to come from Ms. Kent's incredibly creative mind, I am eagerly anticipating each one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Episode You Won't Want To Miss!!!, March 1, 2005
This review is from: The McKenzie Artifact (Paperback)
I think one of the reasons why I like this series so much...aside from the yummy alpha male hero's is due to the fact that each small episode is a stand alone read so if you've missed any you aren't left scratching your head in wonder. These stories are short, steamy, and with great protagonists that compliment each other very well.

Eli is in in a tight situation. He has just returned to undercover duty after being poisoned. He has lost a lot of ground and he must now free 12 women and one thorn in his side lady before they are all sold into slavery. Taking his one shot at making sure this happens he indirectly involves the "thorn in his side" or Stella to create a diversion in order to make contact with the Smithson Group in order to make arrangements to get the heck out of dodge. Well, the diversion works...maybe a little to well and the hostage becomes the prison taker when Eli feels a little more for Stella than irritation. Can he get Stella and himself out of harms way or will Spectra IT win?

This was a very short story. It totals only 115 pages. As a result readers are in for a very fast-paced read since there is a lot included within the previously mentioned pages. Ms. Kent has made the most of what she offers so readers should not be let down in the slightest. I look forward to the continuation of this series and recommend that you check out this series!
