4.0 out of 5 stars The first of a trilogy, March 25, 2007

This review is from: McKettrick's Luck (McKettrick Men Series #1) (Mass Market Paperback)
In McKettrick's Luck by Linda Lael Miller, we revisit a new branch of the McKettrick family, originally portrayed in her previous historical trilogy.

Cheyenne Bridges has brought her family, her mother and brother, back to where she grew up, Indian Rock, Arizona, to complete the deal of her life. She must convince Jesse McKettrick to sell her company a plot of land that he won in a poker game. The sale will set up for life her paraplegic brother and her mother who takes care of him. But the Jesse McKettrick she remembers from her childhood is nothing like the man he's become. Sure, he's still affable and popular, and he seems aimless, making his living as a professional gambler, but he's got reasons for keeping the land, and he's not interested in selling to Cheyenne's company. He is, however, interested in Cheyenne.

This book features Miller's breezy, descriptive writing. She vividly draws the town, and a host of McKettrick family and secondary characters. Cheyenne is a buttoned up, principled woman, who begins to let her hair down as she falls for Jesse. She does have a secret that she keeps from him, but Miller doesn't belabor the point, and the resolution is believable.

Jesse is one of my favorite kinds of heroes, affable on the outside, and determined and strong willed on the inside. He is a generous soul, and gives both of himself and his time to support Cheyenne's troubled brother and herself. The story also introduces Jesse's cousins, Rance and Keegan, both of whom will receive treatment at Miller's deft hand.

I found myself rooting for both characters to communicate with each other and discuss what their issues were. If I had any complaint about the story it's that if they would have done that sooner, things would have worked out faster for them. However, that's a tiny nit-pick with a well-written tale.

Armchair Interviews says if you're looking for a great contemporary cowboy story, you'll find one in McKettrick's Luck

Ms. Miller has once again brought the McKettrick family to life only this time with a new generation. I loved it. Having read the first series and now the first book in the new series I can recommend it without hesitation. The characters are rich and the plot is riveting. This is a must have for any romance reader.

This is the first in the modern day series of the McKettrick men. It will have you hooked from the beginning. Steamy love scenes and realistic story lines. You will become hooked to this series and will insist on reading Rance and Keegan's stories as well. Bravo Ms. Miller!

5.0 out of 5 stars You absolutely MUST READ this book!!!, April 15, 2007
This review is from: McKettrick's Luck (McKettrick Men Series #1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This was my first Linda Lael Miller book, and all I can say is it won't be my last! I picked up this book in a bookstore while looking for a good contemporary western romance. I had definitely heard of this author and thought I would give her a try. WOW! I read this book in one day and can't wait to read the two follow-up books.
Linda Lael Miller has a wonderful way of creating believable, likeable characters that are not completely perfect. Isn't that what people are really like?? The two lead characters of Jesse McKettrick and Cheyenne have a sexual chemistry that is absolutely palpable from chapter one until the end of the book. This is a couple that you will really love and want to see together. There are only two love scenes in this book, but they are Hot! This book is very strong on plot-line and character development. I can't say enough great things about this book! Read it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Miller shines!, May 14, 2007

I actually read McKettrick's Heart first, not really realizing this was a trilogy. McKettrick's Luck is a well written, light read that was hard to put down. Jesse and Cheyenne were wonderful together and I particularly liked Jesse's relationship with her brother, Mitch. All in all, a great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Contemporary Western Romance, April 2, 2008
This review is from: McKettrick's Luck (McKettrick Men Series #1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Very good romance novel about Cheyenne going back to her hometown and falling in love with the guy she had a crush on in school (Jesse) who became a multi-millionaire and owned the land her company wanted to purchase for condominiums. This was a good book that delved into Cheyenne's family, work and love life. I enjoyed the poker and the subplot involving her brother's life, who was only 19 and in a wheelchair because of an accident.

I also found Jesse's family interesting and the fact he wasn't interested in his family's company so didn't even have a job, but instead played poker and rode the range. This book had both a good plot and good character development. It was a fast read and I look forward to reading the others in this McKettrick series.

So far I've enjoyed all the books I've read from this author. McKettrick's Luck is the first book in another good series by Miller. I go through her books fairly quickly and would recommend them to others.
