My first McLane mower lasted over 12 years and is still running!,

I just purchased this McLane 21" mower from Amazon.com. It is my second McLane 21" rotary mower. The first one was purchased over 12 years ago and it is still running! I could not pass up the deal Amazon had on this mower and decided to buy a new one. If you are in the market for a new mower, you will not be disappointed with this one. It is built way better than any Sears, Toro or Yard Machine out there in the same price range.
***Important Note: Make sure your mower has the "mulching kit" installed on it. Mine arrived and was missing the door that covers the grass shoot. It was also missing the spring and the arm setup that hold the door when you use the bagger. If I had not known these parts were included, I may have missed that they had not installed them. If you are missing these parts, contact McLane ASAP. They sent me the parts and I had them in a few days.

McLane Rotary Mower,

I was looking for a replacement blade and came across these reviews. For the person who thought the Mclane mower was not up to his standards, I have had mine since July 17, 1999. Yes it still runs great, I've had it serviced once when the pull cord broke about 2 years ago and it has never let me down. I've replace the blade once, hit lots of rocks, and now I hit an old bush stump. If you want a mower that will last, especially here in Arizona and with someone like me at the helm, this is the one. I'm 64, I think that qualifies me as "Grandpa" and me and the Mclane mower are still "truckin". If you don't think you'll be able to handle this mower when you're a "Grandpa", you better start getting some exercise.

Ups and downs,

In short: This is not a machine for Grandpa or his grand-son due to many design flaws and other design mistakes. One might think that a real good garage tinkerer put it together using what he learned from looking at other mowers' good parts. It all works, but it works like a prototype.
This mower came partially damaged in a big box. The speed control was off it's spindle and the front end was pushed to one side. The assembly went pretty easy other than these two items and the start-up took two pulls. The clutch handle is mis-placed and cumbersome with a very heavy spring requiring a hefty pull to engage the clutch and then a large thumb to hold the clutch in. Whoever deisgned it must be five-foot five and have very large hands. There is no rear differential, so steering is tricky at first because rocking onto the rear wheels does not ease turning. The bag asembly doesn't allow much rocking back. It rattles pretty good after one day in service. The cover on the transmission will have to be removed before long. The rear bag does not sit in it's cradle over any sort of low bump and cannot be removed or re-placed one handed or easily. There is a very strange bit of dis-jointed steel assembly intended for use as a mulch plug, ( lets call this a dumb-assed idea to be kind and remove it remove it before use). The good parts are the motor pull ( which despite it's odd handle placement does not hinder the leverage of the pull itself ), the single lever bed height control, the odd speed control ( a suprizingly efficient design ) and a really short overall length (which would lend itself well to front casters). Half a nod for the ribbed rear wheels. I live and work in Oregon, a place of mud and rain in winter. This mower performed well in medium tall grass and only clogged once in a half-days wet grass mowing.
