Lovely story,
By Denny "Den" (London,UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: McNeil's Match (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a lovely story, it not only exposes the classism and snobbery in the American black middle class commnuity but is a tale of overcoming trials in ones life. In this case an abusive husband and bullying but well meaning older brother. One can understand the Lynne Thurstan's personality since she was raised by her older brother who in turn manipulated her. There is a saying what does not destroy you makes you stronger so after her divorce at 29 she is ready to resume her tennis career and be number one if only for one day. Along the way she meets Sloan Macneil an educated, self made man who runs his own auto mechanic business. The problems comes with not only the heroine trying to make back it in the big leagues as a tennis player, but her domineering husband and brother, the husband wants her back to save face with his congregation and her brother with his snobbish ways tries to get her to break up her relationship. However I was disappointed with Sloan's assumptions in breaking up withb Lynne twice rather than checking facts with her. He also had his hangups with women seeing him as nothing but a grease monkey which affected how he dealt with problem with his lover. The love scenes are very touching and sensual- the line when he asks her if she was satisfied and when he claims her as his made me melt (sigh.). The secondary characaters - Lynne's neighbour and Sloane's parents added a swett touch. Even having the Harringtons in the story was a nice surprise.
