The Best Book for Preparing for TCP/IP certification.,
By A Customer
This review is from: McSe Study Guide: Tcp/Ip and Systems Management Server (Paperback)
When preparing for the TCP/IP exam, I read both Sybex, and New Riders books. The New Riders covered exactly what was on the exam. It was much more detailed and to-the-point. It really got down to the nitty-gritty "what you need to know". It is definitely worth the money!

TCP/IP section is good, SMS REALLY DATED v1.0,

I used this exam to write the 2 MCSE electives and i scored pretty well. The SMS part is really old, MS is at 1.2 now, and thsi book covers 1.0. However, this book has just about the BEST and EASIEST to understand explination on how to do subnetting with subnet masks. It breaks down the TCP/IP address is great detail and its still easy to understand. This book is worth having alone just for it's Subnet mask explination and examples.

Authors Know SMS well - needs to be redone for 1.2,
By A Customer
This review is from: McSe Study Guide: Tcp/Ip and Systems Management Server (Paperback)
I felt the book's content reflected a deep and practical knowledge of SMS on the part of the authors. This book is actually a very good overall planning guide for SMS. Most third party references focus on operations and gloss over site planning issues - yet these are the most important if you are consulting. The book definintely needs an update for SMS 1.2 and the SMS Installer. Success in the SMS test hinges on having a very unpractical level of knowledge of all the complex and interlocking SMS configuration requirements - "small" differences between 1.1 and 1.2 could mean failing the test. This is still the most effective reference for the 1.2 test if you cross-reference it with other resources (product manuals and classroom materials).

Don't waste your money!,
This review is from: McSe Study Guide: Tcp/Ip and Systems Management Server (Paperback)
Technical problems with the book. It has many technical and SPELLING errors. Read that again: SPELLING. Our company is shipping back twenty copies of the book. It is also very dated. It is for NT 3.51 and for SMS 1.1. If you simply must buy the book, then I have some land in Florida that you would just love!

Easy-to-read, many bugs in the material, good TCP/IP book,

This review is from: McSe Study Guide: Tcp/Ip and Systems Management Server (Paperback)
This book was a great text for teaching the Microsoft Certified System Engineer TCP/IP course
and the optional SMS course. The material
is dated because of its tie to NT 3.51 and needs
to be updated. There are numerous errors in the
material including contradictions in the text and
practice questions that have incorrect answers.
If your purpose is to pass the certification exam, this will help.

TCP/IP section good, SMS section poor,
By A Customer
This review is from: McSe Study Guide: Tcp/Ip and Systems Management Server (Paperback)
I read the TCP/IP section through easily. The style is
comfortable and the material is perfect for both
the Microsoft Test and real life. DHCP configuration,
WINS replication, host name resolution, etc. are all
covered in detail.
The SMS Section is very difficult to read through. There
are definitely two writers for this book! After the first
few chapters, I gave up on this one.
Overall, the book is very usefull. Don't plan on using
the SMS section as a first-timer (like me). The TCP/IP will
take you from the ground-floor on up. It was definitely
worth the price just for the TCP/IP section.
