Editorial Reviews

This soundtrack to the fantastic film doesn't disappoint, usually album soundtracks are full of cast off fillers but this album has amazing songs filled with passion vengance to fill your head until sometime next week'"Bitter and Twisted', 'Just a Dream Away', 'Free Me', 'My Time Is Gonna Come' all these songs have hard rocking drum beat, excellent guitar and blistering vocals from the mouth of Roger Daltrey. 'Bitter and Twisted' has some really venomace lyrics and the rest of the lyrics on this album are from the heart and well thought out. and the production of this album is excellent. Universal.

Along with UARM, I consider this Roger's greatest solo album, and it works so well because it's a de facto Who album. Though there are other musicians present on the album, the fact remains that all three of the other bandmembers played on these tracks, even contributing backing vocals on a couple of tracks (such as "My Time Is Gonna Come"). Even his biggest solo hit, "Free Me," came from this album; it reached #20. It's sad how most of Roger's solo career was a joke, since he made horrible decisions about which material to record and with whom to work, coupled with how he didn't seem to be able to find a unique voice for himself as a solo artist. He needed the other guys in the band to be worth anything musically, and here it shines through brilliantly. Consequently, this is the soundtrack to the movie of the same name; it's said that Roger's performance as John McVicar is also his greatest acting role. The songs are great, the music is loud, hard, and rocking, Roger's vocals are top-notch, it features his famous primal screams, along with softer songs like "Without Your Love," it tells the real-life story of bank robber John McVicar very well (McVicar himself co-wrote the screenplay), and there is not a dull moment or throwaway song to be found anywhere. Right from the angry nasty energy of "Bitter and Twisted" all of the way through to the final crescendos of "McVicar," it majorly cooks.

I've listened to this recording on a cassette made from vinyl in 1985. McVicar is one of the classic Daltry albums that has more of a "WHO" flavor than any his albums that proceeded it. Anyone who has any type of WHO collection should add this IMMEDIATELY.

I have owned this LP for almost 20 years. I am so happy to finally see it on CD, and Amazon is the ONLY place that it is available. This is a classic album. Daltrey's voice is, as usual, a powerhouse. Favorite songs include "Without Your Love", "White City Lights", "Free Me" "Just a Dream Away" and "McVicar". The 2 instrumentals fit the suspenseful mood of the film perfectly.

I have worn out 2 records and several cassette tapes of this recording in the last 20 years and it is great to find it in CD format. This is one impressive rock-n-roll powerhouse and a must-own for any Who fan (and that I am). The muscular leader of the Who belts out ferocious rockers as well as mellow ballads on this one. His voice has never been better. The vocals on Free Me will part your hair while the delivery of the subtle Without Your Love will sooth your soul. The songs are just flat-out good. You will find it hard to get this one out of the player. Buy it and enjoy.

I'll start by saying I am a huge fan of The Who. Next to The Beatles and possibly Bob Dylan, Townshends songwriting is the most important in Rock history. But it was Roger Daltreys brilliant yet fallible singing that identified their attitude every bit as much as the songwriting. These songs are very well written, and Daltrey interprets them perfectly, from the rage of "Bitter and Twisted" to the melancholy angst of "Just a Dream Away". I own a copy of McVicar on a cassette recorded off vinyl. It's a delight to finally find it on CD. McVicar is an axceptional soundtrack.

Roger Daltrey's solo album and soundtrack to the film "McVicar" (which he also starred in)may seem like a defacto Who album because, well, it is; although Townshend and Entwistle didn't write any of the material (it's written primarily by Russ Ballard former lead singer of Argent and Billy Nichols)they, along with Kenny Jones, appear on a number of tracks. Granted, they don't often appear together (in fact the most that you get from what I can tell is no more than three members of the band at any given time)on every single track by producer Jeff Wayne ("War of the Worlds") does a good job of recreating the hard rock sound of The Who.

As a result "McVicar" is also one of Daltrey's finest solo albums as well holding its own against his other best work.

The CD sounds extremely good (there's no mastering credit here) with a dyamnic, nice sound transfer. Unfortuntely, there's no bonus tracks or outtakes/alternate takes included and there are also no notes on the making of the album (nor are there any extensive notes as to who plays on each track).

Nevertheless, this is a terrific Daltrey solo album and well worth picking up.

This album is a perfect companion to the late Who albums. Roger Daltry is very powerful, but listen to the two instumentals. Escape 1 and 2 are awesome.
