4.0 out of 5 stars Jimmy's still the man
Jimmy McGriff has MS and is in pretty bad shape. So granted, he can't burn it up like he used to, but his playing on McGriff Avenue is still very soulful and from the heart. Sax Gordon, known mainly as an R&B player, turns in some great solos, and the horn section is held together by the mighty Ronnie Cuber on baritone sax [formerly with George Benson's organ...

2.0 out of 5 stars I love McGriff but...
If you like Jimmy McGriff, you will not like this CD! This item it's just for Hammond organ fans. The sound is great, but the players looks tired here! Jimmy sounds very old and his right hand is so slow and imprecise... anyway, maybe someone will like it if he's not a Jimmy McGriff fan... :-)

Sax Gordon, known mainly as an R&B player, turns in some great solos, and the horn section is held together by the mighty Ronnie Cuber on baritone sax [formerly with George Benson's organ combo]. This one is worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine Wine, June 23, 2009

This review is from: Mcgriff Avenue (Audio CD)
I AM a McGriff fan, and I LOVE this disc. It's all about the groove with Jimmy and this disc has it to spare! The horn playing is excellent and Jimmy just lays down some smooth, cool, groovin' melodies. If you're looking for virtuoso - look how many notes I can cram into one measure - music, keep looking. If you're looking for something to sit back, relax and groove to, this is it. Jimmy is like a fine wine, smoother, rounder edges, but the texture is more layered, the flavor more sophisticated and the experience sublime.
