Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1—This contagiously playful collaboration is filled with sly textual and visual jokes. Songwriter Covert's photo takes center stage on the title page and persists in a hide-and-seek game on the spreads that follow. His face peeks out of a springy kangaroo's pouch, stares between bat wings, flits by in a dragonfly, and reposes in a frog's pouchy cheeks. Keller's impish acrylic and collage illustrations are filled with swirls, sweeps, and explosions of color and shape; their almost musical quality reinforces the song: "Blue fish, red fish,/galloping goats,/puffins and camels/and piranhas in moats." But the song is not just a happy list of animals; it's a wild, whimsical wheedle aimed at two doubting but indulgent parents: "And I wish, I really wish,/I really, really wish/they could be my pets./Oh, please, pretty please,/from the bottom/of my heart/to the top of my head." Readers who don't know Covert's music are at a slight disadvantage: it would be far easier to "hear" the lyrics if the melody were already planted in one's brain. While the words are repeated, along with guitar chords, at book's end, sheet music is not included. Though the abundance of bounciness occasionally makes it hard to follow the text on the page, all is forgiven: in this book, it's the bounce that counts.—Susan Weitz, formerly at Spencer-Van Etten School District, Spencer, NY END

Review

“A jaunty rhyme scheme and fun wordplay keep the story bouncing, while the typography's size and color play up the pleading. Keller (The Scrambled States of America) depicts a zany menagerie in kinetic mixed media artwork that's bursting with fun details; keen-eyed readers will spot photos of Covert's face playfully worked into each spread. Keller seamlessly extends the text to create a true family dynamic, as Mom and Dad adamantly protest ‘Noooooo’ early on, but relent in the end.”—Publishers Weekly

“This contagiously playful collaboration is filled with sly textual and visual jokes.”—School Library Journal

“Musician and author Covert (Ralph’s World Rocks, 2008) incorporates rhyme and a menagerie of animals in this playful title, based on song lyrics, about yearning for a pet. … What shines brightest here are the witty animal illustrations, which add flair to the familiar pet-wish premise.”—Booklist

This is a great book for story times or just bedtimes. The illustrations are funny and packed with lots of things to look at, and the text flows really well for reading aloud. I used this in story time with great results. The kids had a great time with the repetitive portions of the chant and really surprised me by picking out quite alot of stuff in the pictures that I thought would only be noticed if you were reading one on one. A big recommend for preschool classes and moms and dads looking to have a good time with their kids. Sure to gather some giggles!

This wacky picture book is about two kids that really want a pet. They dream of one day owning zany pets such as dinosaur babies, an ocelot, and unicorns! Through out the book the kids figure out that no matter what they come up with their parents just aren't buying it!

Be sure to look for the author, Ralph though out the book! He's hidden somewhere on every page! You can also go online and hear him tell you the story as you look at the book.

In this song set to a picture book, a young child imagines all the many creatures he could possibly have as pets, "Elephants and antelopes and kangaroos, wallabies and penguins from the zoo. Snakes and squirrels and little brown bats, acrobatic circus cats." Many other delightful animals parade through this book.
Its rambunctious refrain, "And I wish, I really wish, I really, really wish they could be my pets. Oh, please, pretty please, from the bottom of my heart to the top of my head. I'll be good, really good, I'll be really, really good and you know I would feed `em all every day and at night I'd tuck `em all in their beds" will make this an appealing read-aloud.
The humorous jazzy illustrations are created with acrylic paint and collage on watercolor paper and using Photoshop. The author's face appears in place of an animal face in each double spread. A recording of this chant performed by the author is available on the publisher web site.
