One of the Most Influential Bluesmen of America Gets His Due, April 23, 2007
If you are a fan of blues or blues-rock, consider your collection incomplete until you own this volume of Robert Johnson's greatest blues recordings. Johnson heavily influenced such modern-day artists as the Rolling Stones, John Mayall, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, and too many more to mention. A mysterious and enigmatic character, Johnson recorded these tracks back in 1936 and 1937, his only two recording sessions. His teachers were Son House and Ike Zinnerman. The myth of Robert Johnson is that he sold his soul to the Devil at a lonely Mississippi crossroads in order to play the blues better than any man alive. He died in 1938, the victim of a jealous husband.
You know most of his tunes, because they have been covered. 'I Believe I'll Dust My Broom' and 'Me and the Devil Blues' being only the most popular.
This is a great CD, with amazing sound for stuff remastered from the thirties. If you enjoy blues or blues rock, or are interested in the roots of modern Rock and Roll, this is a must. The Rolling Stones, Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Eric Clapton, and many more, owe dues to the forgotten man, Robert Johnson.
