Editorial Reviews

Review

"Joshua is vividly depicted through his first-person narrations and amusing interior monologues, and the conflicts he deals with are effectively realized. In all it's an entertaining boy-and-dog adventure set against a not-often-depicted era of political strife that's notably similar to the present." Kirkus Reviews

"Me & Jack is well paced and keeps readers focused and concerned about the characters and their development." School Library Journal

"Will bring tears to even the hardest of hearts." Examiner

More About the Author

I hate tomatoes. The year 2005 was supposed to be the year I Ate A Tomato, but I Did Not Do It. I don't like mushrooms either, but if they are chopped up small enough, I can ignore them.

Pink and purple are my favorite colors, but sometimes I like green.

I am a good skater, and fast too. In fact, I used to have my own custom skates with racing wheels--that's how fast I skate. When I thought I was a grown-up, I gave my skates away. That was a mistake. I could still use them.

Growing up in an Air Force family, I have lived in a lot of places, and I can tell you that the best place to be is in the woods or on the mountains. It is even better if your best friend is with you and you build a fort. My best friend and I built a pretty good fort once, but my sister and her best friend built a better one. It doesn't even bother me to say that.

At six-years-old, I published my own comic book series starring Peter Pan. He jumped into adventure, narrowly missing capture and certain death by his arch enemy, Captain Hook. Most pages featured a green stick figure sword-fighting with a red stick figure. Still, it was pretty good for a six-year-old.

I wrote a lot of stories in junior high, high school, and college, and my teachers seemed to like them. I liked it when they read my stories out loud and my classmates laughed in all the right places. There is nothing like that feeling.

If I wasn't a writer, I'd own a diner and call it Netti's. It would be small--you'd probably pass it if you drove by too fast--but my regulars would be loyal. "Try the sweet potato loaf," they'd tell each other. "It is to die for!"

If you want, you can call me Danette. Here's how you say it: d'NET or DihNET. Some people confuse this with "dinette," which is actually a table. (You can tell the difference because I do not have four legs and I am not a table.) If you forget, don't worry. People have called me Jeanette, Janet, Denise, Danita, Danielle, and Darnet. So even if you say it wrong, I will still turn around and smile and say "Hi," especially if you are holding a donut.

Danette Haworth's ME AND JACK is a wonderful, classic boy-and-his-dog story in some ways, but it goes far beyond that, too. Set during the Vietnam War, it takes a look at attitudes and biases from a handful of angles, most notably through the main character's father's position as a wartime recruiter new in town. Full of enough humor and adventure to appeal to reluctant readers, this is also a great look at the home front during the Vietnam years. Pair it with Cynthia Kadohata's CRACKER: THE BEST DOG IN VIETNAM for a really fascinating discussion about the war and the role the two dogs played in their owners' lives during a tough time.

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on an advanced review copy. Loved the book for it's ability to entertain while also educate and shed light on a time and mindset that few kids today have though about. Given the fist person POV the author did an outstanding job of presenting the dilemma from several different angles. I immediately handed the book to my boys and they are now happily reading it.

Joshua Reed is the son of an United States Air Force Recruiter in 1967 during the Vietnam War. He and his father, newly widowed, have relocated to many places and now a small town in Pennsylvania. Joshua lost his mother. The father and him adopt a dog from the local pound that Joshua named "Jack Daniel." Life hasn't been smooth sailing for Joshua in his new hometown.

His father has to deal with anti-war protests, hatred, and anger at him for his job on a daily basis. His father has become the scapegoat when the boys don't come home alive. Still, he proceeds to do his job as a recruiter.

Josh and his dog, Jack, have to deal with the kids in the neighborhood like the Prater boy who doesn't like dogs with a good reason. Suddenly, Jack the dog becomes enemy number one and suspect to killing cats and chickens in the neighborhood. I didn't like the rabbit kill aspect of the story.

Still the story is Josh trying to redeem and vindicate his beloved Pharaoh hound, Jack, in the 1967. The story is okay and n easy read for a young reader.

Review from my nine-year old grandson: "This book is awesome. I loved it. I have a dog like Jack who is a MinPin, so he looks like a miniature Jack with short floppy ears. The friendship between human and dog will open your heart to dogs if you don't like dogs already, or if you have had a bad history with dogs. Jack is loving, loyal, protective, and helps the boy. I don't want to give the boy's name away. There is another boy named Prater who is mean to Jack, but comes to love him. I am going to read this book again today because it is so good!!!!!!"

This was such a great book! The main character seemed so real to me and I loved the way the author depicted his amazing dog, Jack. The storyline was beautiful and I would definitely read it again. Thank you again, Danette Haworth, for such an amazing story!
