Raven presents two original, essential albums on one cd by country legends chet atkins and jerry reed: the grammy award-winning me and jerry (1970) and me and chet (1972). When two of the greatest guitar players in the history of country music teamed up for these classic instrumental albums (originally released on rca victor), the results were refined, joyous and highly entertaining. A true country legend, atkins had made an indelible impression as a session guitarist and record producer for over 20 years and by the early 1970s was intent on expanding his range. Reed was coming off the success of hits like 'georgia sunshine', 'amos moses' and 'when you're hot' and these good-natured sessions allowed the duo to let loose in the studio. On me and jerry atkins' playing is precise and tasteful while reed is typically brash and rollicking, with covers of pop hits 'bridge over troubled water' and 'macarthur park', plus merle travis' 'cannonball rag' and reed compositions 'nut sundae' and 'stump water'. Second time around, me and chet is another brilliant session of instrumental guitar interplay. All country tunes, with reed's 'jerry's breakdown' highlighting the pickers displays of speed while 'good stuff' is slow and swampy. The highlight is a spirited take on 'mystery train'. With eight bonus tracks (six never before on cd), superb quality audio, detailed notes, colour booklet.

I remember the first time I ran across this collection, when I was in Japan. I had been a fair weather fan of Chet Atkins since boyhood, and I heard that guy from Smokey and the Bandit was a pretty good guitar player, too. So I thought, what the heck, I'll buy it and give it a listen. Little did I realize that once I hit the play button and "Jerry's Breakdown" started coming out of my speakers, my whole life would change. This CD began a quest through used record stores throughout the world (mainly L.A.; this was before the internet) trying to find any and every Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed record in existence. My undying and ever increasing love of hot country guitar playing began here and has led me to Roy Nichols, James Burton, Cliff Gallup, Merle Travis, Brent Mason, Albert Lee, Phil Baugh, Johnny Hiland, Danny Gatton, Don Rich, Jimmy Bryant, Redd Volkaert, and on and on and on. If these names thrill your heart and ears like they do mine, and you still don't own this CD BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!! (Especially before these recordings go out of print again, as they often do). In the delicious bowl of hot country guitar soup created by all the above mentioned chefs, "Me and Chet/Me and Jerry" is the main ingredient.

If you claim to be a fan of Chet and/or Jerry you are REQUIRED to buy this product if you do not already own it, so quit dilly-dallying and get on with it. Be advised, though, that the hardware I received (this is one CD with the songs from two previously released albums on it) had the song titles switched - The "Me and Jerry" songs had the titles from "Me and Chet" and vice versa.
