Grade 6-8 The news that rock star Joey Pinstripe is moving into her apartment house has made ninth-grader Mary Kate Bernquist the most popular person in school. Joey's arrival does bring problems also, however. The worst one comes in the form of a pair of punkish weirdos named Logo and Yvonne who kidnap Mary Kate's puppy in order to force her to obtain Joey's autograph. This all ties in with Logo's scheme to garner a share of the drug market at Mary Kate's school. Her efforts to solve her increasingly complex problems with Logo and Yvonne without involving her parents only make things worse, until finally she has alienated Joey himself. Mary Kate's ultimate realization that her problems stem from her failure to follow through on what she believes is credible. The melodramatic description of the school's rapid transformation into a virtual opium den and its equally rapid salvation is not as believable, but Shyer's touch is deft enough to avoid sounding preachy.
