Editorial Reviews

Mariah Carey is the best-selling female artist of all time with more than 200 million albums sold to date and a record 18 Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles (17 self-penned), more than any solo artist in history. With her distinct five-octave vocal range, prolific songwriting, and producing talent, Mariah is the template of the modern pop icon. The Grammy award-winning artist's 14th studio album will feature production from Rodney Jerkins, Jermaine Dupri, Hit-Boy, and Mike Will Made It, as well as performances from NAS, Wale, Miguel, Fabolous, and Mariah's twins Moroccan and Monroe.

Fans have been waiting for this often-pushed back record for years and won't be disappointed. As Mariah said herself, the album needs to be heard as a body of work rather than based on the radio-friendliness of the singles. It's her most solid work as a whole in a long time. The content ranges from ballads and hip hop numbers to soothing R&B songs and disco-friendly hits.

I've purchased the Deluxe Version from Target because I need all the songs but I'm buying this version too because you can never have too many Mariah albums!

1. "Cry." The album opens rather unexpectedly with a ballad where most fans are used to hearing an up-tempo song. It's a perfect introduction to the album. It's probably her best vocal on the album and already a fan-favorite. People compare it to "Vision of Love" but it's more restrained and works beautifully. 10/10

2. "Faded" is a mid-tempo R&B song that people are comparing to "We Belong Together." Although you can hear some similarities in the piano and the final notes, it stands on its own. It's sure to be a new Mariah classic. It could be a good single eventually. 10/10

3. "Dedicated" is what many critics are calling the 90's throw-back track. It does sound like something that could've been on the Daydream album and is always appreciated. I have to admit, this song really grew on me. 10/10

4. "#Beautiful" is Mariah's biggest hit of this decade that nay-sayers "underperformed" which is ridiculous because it sold over a million copies and was the song of the summer. The collaboration with Miguel is, just like the title, beautiful. It really won MC over some new fans and made her prove her relevance almost 25 years after she burst onto the scene. 10/10

Mariah Carey is perhaps one of the most polarizing artist in my recent memory. Spanning a commercial career of almost 25 years I can't think of many artist whose catalog goes from singing what would now be considered adult contemporary pop music to pop/r&b/hip hop fusion. Its interesting because I appreciate Mariah's artistry in all of its forms. I can see her musical brilliance even in those moments where people are divided on which era of Mariah they'd rather hear. Now, let's get something straight. I don't consider myself a lamb. I was riding with Mariah before this phenomenon of naming your fans ever came into existence. I just love her voice from 1990 until now. Granted there was a period of time around Rainbow that I felt something was off but I'm a fan none the less. With the Elusive Chanteuse, I hear elements of all Mariah's back catalog all on one album.

It opens up with Cry. Which is classic 1990/1991 Mariah. And I must admit, I love that Mariah. Her voice is truly remarkable and make no mistake Mariah can still blow her face off despite whatever challenges vocally she has faced. This song lets me know that Mariah of 1990 is still there but she's moved on with her artistry. Some like it some don't. "Faded" is another gem on the album that fuses the more modern sounds with the carefree vocals that Mariah is known for. Her voice lifts effortlessly on this number. The disco/2step song "You don't know what to do" w/ Wale is a smash waiting to happen. "Supernatural" is a cute song with dembabies that she affectionately calls her kids and I enjoyed hearing them on the song. I got the point of the song with the kids on it. "Meteorite". This is a line dancing song if I ever heard and its excellent.

When listening to this gorgeous new album, I cant help but be transported back to a time when Mariah Carey was first starting out and you would hear these powerhouse vocals on the radio or on TV. She took a break from this style of singing in the last decade chasing after fresher beats and muted vocals which resulted in major success with her song of decade, "We Belong Together." I am so glad to report that Mariah focuses on showcasing her lyrical prowess and THAT vocal magic on this album. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ALBUM.

What you get here is a jam packed album of beautiful melodic music from an iconic artist who becomes eligible for the rock n roll hall of fame next year. What you may not be getting is immediately accessible made for radio tracks, which I am relieved about. Mariah no longer needs to be recording music for radio to respond to.

To describe this album, lets start with her tradition of doing a cover or two on her albums. My favorite track on the album happens to be one of these covers, the George Michael track "One More Try." For you 80's fans, if you really want some nostalgia, listen to this one immediately. For fans of more upbeat, Mariah dips into disco dance sounds for two tracks and she sounds right at home. One of them, You Don't Know What To Do, could be 2014's summer dance jam and features Wale while Meteorite is a magical disco house jam which rockets her into exciting new territory.

The balladry is just near perfection on tracks like Cry. and Camouflage while tracks like Thirsty and Dedicated have super fresh urban beats that could easily find a home on today's radio playlists if given the opportunity. There really is something for all of her fans on this project all while maintaining a full project experience.

why is this version so expensive???
Hi, the Deluxe Version has three extra songs, one is "The Art of Letting Go," one of her best songs ever, "It's a Wrap," a song from Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel that she then made a duet with Mary J. Blige and "Betcha Gonna Know Part 2", a duet with R. Kelly; the... Read More

Hope there's a Clean Version.
I heard the entire album, that's the only song with the profanity in it! I like that song too, but I won't listen to it with the language. The rest of the album is pretty good!
