This one is for very specific tastes ..., April 29, 2011
This review is from: Me Muero Por Estar Contigo (Audio CD)
Disclaimer: I am not the target audience for this disc. Unfortunately I do not know Spanish (it is all in Spanish), and I am not especially drawn to Laurence Welk / Mantovani style accompaniment. But I do search pretty broadly for different music. I bought this as a "world music" blind purchase. If you like very sparely instrumented ballads with decent vocals, and like a slightly syrupy romantic mid-20th century sound, then you might like this. It has a lot of "old time" Latin elements: soft/sad trumpets and the like. It also has a lot of lackadaisical strumming of a rhythm guitar (but none of the classical Spanish plucked guitar), and no shortage of melodrama violins. So, if you're hunting for some new find like Cesaria Evora's "Miss Perfumado," keep looking (elsewhere). But, if you listen to a lot of 1930 & 1940 mellow pop, you might actually really like this. Again, I have no idea how things might improve (or degrade) if the listener understands the lyrics.
