This book is a delight! Wonderful quirky illustrations! Very imaginative and funny! All the more enjoyable if you actually have a cat (but fun for Dog Lover's too!)

Satoshi Kitamura is the Kazuo Ishiguro of the under-5 set. "ME and my Cat" is of my daughter's favorite books, and she's a serious fan of Kitamura's oeuvre. A great book when they've outgrown "Duck Is Dirty" and other board books.

Me and My Cat is a funny story. Satotoshi Kitamura is a good author to write books for children like this one, "Sheep in Wolves`Clothes" and "Dog is Thirsty." I like to read these stories.

DEFINITELY SCRATCH HEARTS,
This review is from: Me and My Cat? (Hardcover)
Vivid Illustrution! Fantastic Story! Satoshi Kitamura is wonderful in telling stories about sheep, gold fish, and milllepede. And this time, everybody will enjoy the experience of being a cat without reasons. Be ready to purr!

Delightful, though surprisingly scared my 5 year old,

Very cute and funny book about what happens when Nicholas switches places with his cat for the day. My kids giggled a lot, especially at all the cat-as-person and person-as-cat antics. THey also enjoyed seeing some of the cats from Kitamura's other books. The witch is a little unnecessary (I don't think the story required a reason for the switch) and frightened one of my children a little.

Weird religious pictures,

This review is from: Me and My Cat? (Paperback)
The artwork in this book is very enjoyable, but the text just seems flat to me. I'd look at the picture on each page and smile, then read the words and feel bored. I also don't care for the witch climbing in through the window - it's odd and feels out of place, and may be scary for young children who are already concerned about things under the bed and in the closet; mostly it's just unoriginal. I'd rather not know why the transformation occurred (as in Imogene's Antlers, she just wakes up that way). And has anyone else noticed the very religious pictures decorating the walls of the house? Is that a picture of Lazarus walking out of the tomb? A Roman soldier asleep in front of Jesus's tomb? On pages where Mom is holding Nicholas, there are pictures of Mary holding Jesus. It's weird, and a little creepy, like subliminal messages.
Overall, an interesting idea, worth looking at once, not a must have. |
