me and my girl,
This review is from: Me And My Girl: The Lambeth Walk Musical (1985 London Revival Cast) (Audio CD)
I bought this CD because it was the original London based cast album...I owned the NY Broadway cast album with many of the same cast as the London album but it just is not as good....the London production is of a much higher quality in the delivery, vocal and orchestral arrangements and even in dialogue....if you want a choice between productions definiately go to the original London cast album.

I saw this show both in Britain (I had a spare evening and tried it just on a flier) and the U.S. I loved it in England and bought tickets when I saw it was opening in New York. I have both cast albums (London and Broadway), and both have their strong points. Overall, the Broadway album has a sharper performance (especially by the pit band -- no one beats Broadway musical pit bands), and it also has a song the London doesn't ("Hold My Hand"). On the other hand, the London has a song the Broadway doesn't ("If Only You Had Cared for Me") and Emma Thompson. You can't go wrong with either. By the by, this show was a huge hit on Broadway. It opened in August 1986 and ran 1,420 performances -- longer than the original productions of The Music Man, Guys and Dolls, or The King and I!

It's sad that this musical never became a hit in the U.S., even though "The Lambeth Walk" became fairly big. I don't have the CD (yet), but I found an old vinyl copy in a local Goodwill store; the score is marvelous, Robert Lindsay deserved all the awards he received, and Emma Thompson (before we Yanks heard of her) is a revelation. It's all good, clean musical fun.
