Book Description

July 16, 2010
Me, Myself & Paris is author Ruth Yunker's droll pastiche of her days, free and unaccompanied, in Paris. Three years in a row she rents an apartment, stays for six weeks, and takes on Paris, half resident, half visitor. She is a short attention span tourist, a wide-eyed voyeur, and irreverence saves the day when the chips are down. Her stories are about bonhomie and savoir-faire, American style, while treading the hallowed and slippery cobblestones of Paris.

It's about every day errands, and sorties into dutiful sightseeing. It's about run-ins with grocery store cashiers and metro ticket agents. It's about desperately trying to speak French. It's about attempting to emulate the chic, windblown Parisian woman wearing no lipstick, while Ruth wouldn't be caught bare lipped outside the boudoir.

She conquers the metro, no mean feat for a Californian glued to a car. She hears ghosts in cathedrals, and smells bread toasting every morning across the courtyard. She learns to make correct change without her reading glasses. Comes to understand that direct eye contact is a flagrant disregard of manners, even when she most needs a hug.

Me, Myself & Paris is what Paris looks like, feels like, smells like, tastes like, to an American woman, free and unfettered, sense of humor and bonhomie alive and well, alone and loving it, in the most beautiful and temperamental city in the world.

More About the Author

I am a humorist, writer, and columnist. I live in Southern California, and am almost okay with that.
I've been writing for years, starting with serious short stories, which I published in several literary journals. Concurrently I wrote magazine articles, book reviews, astrology columns and self-help columns for single mothers. That was back when I was a single mother.
My book ME, MYSELF and PARIS came to be...well because a writer's life is grist for the mill. Family and friends have been warned! A few years ago I went to Paris with the intent of getting away from it all, for as long as I could. I went for six weeks, rented an apartment, and lived half as a tourist, and half as a resident. By the end of that six weeks, I had a book! It took two more trips to really have a book...and the result is ME, MYSELF and PARIS One Toe Under the Eiffel Tower, The Other In the Grocery Store.
I'm still traveling to Paris every year, and am currently working on ME, MYSELF and PARIS DEUX.
It has been suggested I branch out...and perhaps I will...but beautiful Paris, with all her eccentricities, has a permanent place in my heart.

1.0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment, May 6, 2011

This review is from: Me, Myself and Paris: One Toe Under the Eiffel Tower, The Other In the Grocery Store (Hardcover)
The writing style is clumsy and the "stories" aren't terribly interesting. I wanted to be transported to Paris. Instead, I was transported to the author's internal whining. It's quite possibly the worst travel/expat memoir I've ever encountered.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very interesting., February 17, 2011
I really enjoy travel narrative books but this one was very difficult to stay interested in. The author seemed to be more self-absorbed than need be.

1.0 out of 5 stars So disappointed, short and without any real stories., April 10, 2011

I've never been so disappointed with a book I bought on Amazon... First this book is incredibly short, it took me about 40 minutes to read it. And this isn't any type of long narrative about her time in Paris, it is just random short stories of 2 to 10 pages that have no value whatsoever.

I strongly recommend not buying this book.
