Editorial Reviews

Review

"The workbook format makes The Me Nobody Knows an excellent resource for clinicians to use with adolescents who need to work on traumatic sequelae of sexual abuse. Highly recommAnded." (Suzanne Sgroi, M.D., author of Handbook of Clinical Intervention in Child Sexual Abuse)

From the Inside Flap

When teenagers are victims of sexual abuse, the 'normal' problems of adolescence are exacerbated. These teenagers have trouble distinguishing what is typical concern from what is the result of sexual abuse.Barbara Bean and Shari Bennett validate the conflicting emotions aroused by sexual abuse and offer these adolescents simple, concrete advice about reporting the abuse and how to seek counseling. The Me Nobody Knows is unique in that it is a book for teenagers in therapy that have been victims of sexual abuse, as well as for therapists treating these teenagers. Through written, visual, and relaxation exercises, the book shows survivors how to begin to cope.

Format: Paperback
This book is an excellent resource for teen survivors of sexual abuse, their parents, teachers, and counselors. I teach 7th through 12th grade adolescents within a state hospital setting. Many of the teens I teach are survivors of sexual abuse, and I have used this book as a resource for them for the past several years. The book is written in very straightforward language and in a readable format. It includes realistic discussions about feelings and easily usable suggestions for dealing with those feelings and other aftereffects of sexual abuse. I feel the authors treat the book's readers with respect and intelligence, never preaching nor talking down to them. Another outstanding book on this topic I also provide in my library for my students is: How Long Does it Hurt? A guide to recovering from incest and sexual abuse for teenagers, their friends, and their families, by Cynthia L. Mather.

The only problem is that the book was written in 1993. Some information is outdated and the book does not go into the role of disclosure resulting in punishment for the sexual offender. It does have good information for a therapist who works with sexually abused teenagers as I do. Thanks.
