Book Description

Journals of Bartholomew Bandy August 13, 2002
After his post-war adventures in movies in New York (see Me Bandy, You Cissie) our hero returns to his Ottawa Valley home in 1923. Through a series of misunderstandings Bandy becomes the official Liberal candidate in a by-election and to the horror of the Liberal Party leaders – especially Prime Minister Mackenzie King – he wins, takes his seat in the House of Commons, and proceeds to wreak havoc there.

To finance his campaign he goes into business with Gallop’s local tycoon to smuggle booze into the Prohibition-hit United States, a profitable business until the unpleasantness with the U.S. authorities and all the shooting and wounding. But it does make him a House of Commons authority on corruption in the Canadian government, which leads to his lightning elevation to Mackenzie King’s Cabinet as Minister of Defence. Will this last?

About the Author

Donald Jack was born in England and served in the Royal Air Force in the Second World War before coming to Canada. He was known for his film and television scripts, and his plays. He is most widely remembered, however, for The Bandy Papers, a series of comic novels recounting the adventures of a blundering First World War hero who went on to fame and misfortune in the post-war world. The first six books in the series, Three Cheers For Me; That’s Me In The Middle; It’s Me Again; Me Bandy, You Cissie; Me Too and This One’s On Me were recently re-published by McClelland & Stewart. They gained no fewer than three Leacock Awards for Humour and the undying loyalty of Bandy fans everywhere.

Donald Jack passed away in 2003 at the age of 78.

5.0 out of 5 stars Continuing a great series...., January 23, 2004
This review is from: Me Too: Volume Five of the Bandy Papers (The Journals of Bartholomew Bandy, Volume 5) (Paperback)
Donald Jack has written some of the funnies scenes I have ever read. Bandy's last flight in his Vimy is a classic. The series is 5 stars all the way (until the last two books). If you like humor and/or great historical fiction (they aren't often found together!), you will love these books.
