As he has done for the last 35 years or so, Brazil's Gilberto Gil continues to make top quality music, this time in the form of a film soundtrack. What amazed me the most after hearing the cd many times is the consistent life that the cd has. Gil, as always, weaves a glorious mix of samba, bossa nova, and traditional regional musics that are so infectious that it is impossible not to feel great upon listening to them. His skills as a songwriter, and the expert craftsmanship he puts into every song he does, continues to evolve, making him (with Caetano Veloso) the most diverse songwriter Brazil has to offer today. Fans of traditional Brazilian folk music, as well as hard core Gil fans, will find much to savor in this cd. If you are curious about Brazilian music or are looking for something new to listen to, this will also be the cd for you. A glorious effort by one of Brazil's elder statesmen.

Sorry to disagree with Pablo, but this is Gilberto Gil returning to his roots: the forro music of Bahia's interior and, in particular, the baiao rhythm that Gil has said is at the heart of all his songs. For those who haven't heard forro, imagine a more syncopated version of Tex-Mex norteno, or polka that really swings. And here Gil mainly sticks to the basic forro line-up: accordion, the zabumba drum and the triangle. In some ways it's really Gil's tribute to Luiz Gonzaga, one of the heroes of Brazilian music and the composer of several classics on this CD. And it's truly a beautiful homage: Gonzaga wrote achingly beautiful and happy music about one of the saddest and poorest regions of Brazil. Gonzaga's 'Asa Branca' details the migration of poor northeasterners to the big city, and the bouncing 'Que Nem Jilo' is, amazingly, about heart-break. And here Gil does it all justice, updating the sound but sticking to its roots with a great back-up band that includes percussion genius Marcos Suzano and extensive contributions from saxophonist/flutist Carlos Malta. A great break from Gil's latest over-produced and over-done recent work. Buy it, you'll love it.

This cd is really a collection of very traditional brazilian music. The arrangements are also very traditional in the sense that Gil does not use many unconventionl instruments like synthesizers. Only very typical instruments are used like flutes, percusions, bass and acordeon.
Very nice cd.
