5.0 out of 5 stars Superyummy!
I recently received this cookbook as a gift. I have two other Norene Gilletz cookbooks. Although I have 30-40 cookbooks on my shelf, I have to say that this cookbook is something special. 2.0 out of 5 stars I did not like this cookbook
Most of the recipes I tried in this cookbook turned out below average in taste. Given that I've made good food from other recipe sources, I don't think I'm the problem - this book is.

I recently received this cookbook as a gift. I have two other Norene Gilletz cookbooks. Although I have 30-40 cookbooks on my shelf, I have to say that this cookbook is something special. The recipes are a combination of traditional Jewish with more modern, almost California-style tastes. What makes the book special is its presentation. Each recipe is not only explained very clearly, there is an descriptive introduction to each one (e.g. says it's a favorite of her students/caterees), there are a number of notes offering tips, or replacement items. Also, she tells us which recipe can be frozen. Most importantly, the tips allow a nonprofessional cook to gradually learn how to be flexible in her/his cooking abilities, experimenting with different forms of the same recipe.

5.0 out of 5 stars As a dietitian/nutritionist, I recommend THIS cookbook!, November 6, 2000

Marilyn Rabin (Montréal, Québec (CANADA)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mealleaniyumm!: All That's Missing is the Fat! (Kitchen) (Hardcover)
Meal Lean i Yumm! is more than just another cookbook with the fat removed. It is a superb resource for health professionals who have been searching for the ultimate way to assist their clientèle in implementing both basic and advanced nutrition care recommendations. The solution to many nutritionally related diseases is with just the right combination of ingredients found in Norene's delicious contemporary and traditionally based recipes. Foods you may have been reluctant to try, such as tofu and quinoa, will now be part of your regular menu. This book has so much to offer: 1) it promotes a variety of ingredients that are easily available and affordable, 2) it provides scientifically sound information about food and nutrition and advocates moderation rather than radical means of reducing the fat content in our daily diet. A generous number of menu planning ideas compliments practically every recipe. This book is a blend of motivation and education with the support of 800 superb recipes. Norene's style makes it so easy to modify your eating habits and feel terrific.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great cookbook from Norene Gilletz, March 29, 2000
This review is from: Mealleaniyumm!: All That's Missing is the Fat! (Kitchen) (Hardcover)
Once again Gilletz creates a cookbook with recipes that I will use over and over again, even though I was a bit of a sceptic when I first saw her new book. After being a fan of Norene's cookbooks for years, I wasn't sure how I would like her new "lowfat, healthy style". With a subtitle reading "All That's Missing is the Fat", I said to myself, how could it be any good without fat? Well I am here to tell you that her new cookbook is filled with appealing and creative recipes that really do taste great. Suddening I am not only enjoying delicious food, but feel good that I am eating well and eating healthier - and I don't feel as if I am depriving myself. Be prepared to literally start drooling when you begin reading this book. Recipes like "Roxie's Portobello Mushroom Burgers", Lemon Dill Chicken In A Pouch, Sesame Salmon, and Blueberry Apple Phyllo Pie will have your mouth watering with anticipation. Besides all the delicious recipes there are hundreds of great tips and ideas on how to begin healthier habits. Those tips, suggestions and sage advice add incredible value to this book. Norene, if you are reading this, be assured I will never doubt you again. You are the "Cookbook Queen"!

5.0 out of 5 stars A few words from the author..., March 24, 2003
Even though MealLeaniYumm! has a new subtitle, it still contains the same easy, delicious recipes found in the original hard-cover edition! I also updated the nutritional information to comply with recommendations from the Canadian Heart & Stroke Association, as well as current dietary guidelines from health professionals.

The new subtitle provides a more accurate description of MealLeaniYumm!

"800 Fast, Fabulous & Healthy Recipes for the Kosher (or not) Cook"

If you don't have an idea of what Kosher cooking is all about, don't worry - good food is good food! The recipes use basic ingredients found in most kitchens.

If you are Jewish, you'll be happy to know that my recipes follow Kosher guidelines. You'll find an excellent selection of quick, easy recipes for any time of the year, including Passover, which is always a challenge.

People constantly tell me, "MealLeaniYumm is my new bible. I love the easy recipes, variations and helpful tips!"

MealLeaniYumm! (pronounced meal.lean.ni.yum, as in millennium) is an excellent resource for cardiac patients, weight-watchers, diabetics, or anyone with weight and health concerns. It is highly recommended by dietitians and other health professionals.

About the new binding:-
Thanks to new technology, the specially designed softcover binding stays open when you are using it, so you won't have to put your flour cannister on top of the pages while cooking to keep the book open! (The same special layflat binding is the same one found on my cookbook "The Food Processor Bible.")

I hope this answers your questions. If not, just email me at ... .

My motto is "Food that's good for you should taste good!" Cook in good health.

Norene Gilletz

5.0 out of 5 stars Mealleaniyumm, November 27, 2001

This review is from: Mealleaniyumm!: All That's Missing is the Fat! (Kitchen) (Hardcover)
I have found the recipes in this book to be diversified, interesting and very easy to follow. Having been privileged in personally seeing Norene demonstrating her professional cullinary skills both with ease and humour, I found this book to be as enjoyable and informative as her teaching...the recipes are just like 'mom used to make'...who could ask for more than that except having her in the kitchen right beside you!!! Cheers for a book that delivers what it promises!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars great book!, February 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mealleaniyumm!: All That's Missing is the Fat! (Kitchen) (Hardcover)
I always had trouble finding cookbooks to use, as I am a lazy cook and a picky eater. This one is great, all the recipes use common ingredients and are very simple. I found so many recipes I could use here. Don't be discouraged by what Amazon says about availability, this book is freely available in Canada all over the place.

I would have liked it to have been a little less worn, but the price was right and hopefully, it will get a lot more wear and tear. Thanks for the speedy shipping!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Go-To Cookbook, March 18, 2009
This is the cookbook that has a permanent spot on my kitchen counter! It is really the best cookbook I have ever used. The recipes are straight forward and healthy and the result is always flavourful and good. Our favourite recipe is the Easy Carrot Soup (we make the squash ginger variation and the kids ask for seconds and thirds).

This is a GREAT book. I bought it after my husband had by pass surgery and have never looked back.
I collect cookbooks and it is my "go to" book for everything. Have not run across a bad recipe. From soup to cake, everything is great. The carrot cake is YUMMY and heart healthy!! So far have given 5 of these books to friends and they too love it. Can not wait for the new book coming in May '07.
