Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-- Sue Strong, 15, has no special talents or interests. Her father is a jingle writer for TV advertising, her mother is dead, and she is being raised by the maid. Her next-door neighbor is Miss Popularity, which poses a real identity problem. Sue decides to become involved in a health and fitness program; on her first day at the women's health club she runs into her next door neighbor and decides that it is not for her. Her mother's brother-in-law has a weight-lifting gym, so she tries that and finds her talent--she is a natural power lifter. Much like Spinelli's There's a Girl in My Hammerlock (S. & S . , 1991), this is a story about a young woman who finds her niche in an unconventional sport. While it doesn't move as smoothly as that story, it does have just enough of a different twist to make it interesting. The characters are believable, although the maid is somewhat overdrawn. An easy, pleasant read. --Kenneth E. Kowen, Atascocita Middle School Library, Humble, TX
