From the Inside Flap

"The Mean Mom's Guide to Raising Great Kids" encourages overly nice "marshmallow" moms to instill a few much-needed boundaries. It motivates parents to stand their ground when childrearing is tough, most especially when a child doesn't like them for it.

Covering parenting from preschool to high school, each of the four sections highlights topics specific to each age. Scripture is weaved throughout as a continual reminder of God's truth, and "Mom 2 Mom" quotes at the end of each chapter are filled with heartfelt transparency from dozens of moms who lent their own experiences to encourage the reader. Mean moms encourage openly, love passionately, and know full well being called mean by her child is oftentimes a compliment.

The Mean Mom's Guide to Raising Great Kids is the antidote for a parenting style very common in recent generations. Being friends with our kids won't create well-adjusted independent adults. If you want to be your kids' friend, aptly called a marshmallow mom by Joanne, you'll likely find your adult children living in your basement like a toe fungus you can't shake. Being mean is more effective than being a marshmallow.

Joanne Kraft not only talks about Mean Mom parenting, she lives it out. Lest you think a mean mom is... well mean and nasty. Think again. "A mean mom encourages openly, loves passionately, and knows being called mean is oftentimes a compliment," says Joanne. It's tough to be a productive parent.

Written with sweet faith, generous grace and lots of Joanne's crazy humorous style, you'll find real stories of healthy parenting from Joanne and her Mean Moms Team on every subject in family life from chores to technology—imparting respect to not taking sides. You'll be encouraged when you love your kids too much to rescue them from a mistake knowing it will teach them a lesson in life better than your constant nagging. You'll feel comfort knowing it's normal to feel the pain of being the "bad guy" because you know what's best for your innocent ones.

The Mean Moms Guide is simply the answer for parents who feel they need fortification for doing the right thing when raising their kids.

Joanne Kraft is one of my all time favorite authors. With humor, wit and wisdom she gives fantastic advice on what it means to be a "Mean Mom." Mean Moms walk by faith, put their marriage first, set curfews and have backbones. Our society today is full of kids who feel entitled and are self-focused. Mean Moms teach their kids the world does not revolve around them and how to look beyond what is right in front of them.
I love this book. A must read for every Mom.

The Mean Mom's Guide to Raising Great Kids is a must read for any generation. If you have kids that have been raised and are well on their way to their own lives, pick up this book and read about all of the great ways you participated in their upbringing (and continue to do so). If you have kids that are still at home and get "stuck" in the day to day arguments, questions, situations, you'll find this guide to be most enlightening. Chalk full of tips, suggestions and just plain old common sense, peppered with humor, triumphs and failures on the part of other "mean moms", you'll feel right at home reading these pages. Joanne brings levity, irony, and insight to raising great kids in today's society, with today's rules, and with the strong hand of God throughout these wise words. Are you a Marshmallow Mom or a Mean Mom? Find out. Drop Joanne a note and let her know your story.

The Mean Mom's Guide to Raising Great Kids is a Christian parenting book about not being so soft on your children, and letting you know that it's ok to be a mean mom when you need to, and when your children need you too. I have learned that once in a while, like when it came to letting my daughter attend this sleep over, that I can also be a marshmallow mom too, and that it's ok to be who I am.

Joanne incorporated her parenting techniques into this book and how they worked for her and her family, and how we can teach them to our children. But most of all, this book has taught me how to teach my children about God, and about God's love for them and that God will always be there for them and with them throughout their lives.

One excerpt from the book that has helped me: "If my kids complain something is too hard, like...you know, putting their shoes away, I tell them "You were made to do hard things." - Ashley Gerhard"

My kids are always coming up with some excuse as to why they can't pick up their toys, shoes, plates, etc. Telling them that they were made to do hard things has helped a lot. I've also heard this saying, "If your big enough to make the mess, then your big enough to clean it up." That quote has come in handy when they complain that they can't clean their bedroom or the living room of their toys.

The Mean Mom's Guide to Raising Great Kids book talks about everything from putting your marriage first, teaching your children about honor, giving to TV, technology and more! This book is a must read for every Mom and Dad too!

I’ve been a parent for the past twenty-six years – over half my life. I’m still at it with two children under my roof. In these almost three decades of doing mothering there are times when my parenting (as a job) grows stale; day-old parenting as well as day-old bread isn’t as tasty as a loaf fresh from the oven. This is why I’m thankful for Joanne Kraft’s "The Mean Mom's Guide to Raising Great Kids." I didn’t secure my copy thinking I had a whole lot of new mothering tips to learn; instead, I knew I would learn something further. I would have the opportunity to lean in and to listen to Joanne's heart - a heart that can be trusted. Like me, she's been doing this mothering gig for a long season.

Joanne’s book reignited something inside of me – a push of sorts to be more engaged in these final years of parenting the two children beneath my roof. "The Mean Mom’s Guide to Raising Great Kids" is not about getting your “mean” on. Instead, it is a grace-filled invitation to invest in the everyday worlds of our children and to say, “I’m here. I care. We’re in this together, and by God’s grace, I’m going to help you walk these next steps successfully.” Mean moms don’t leave the parenting to others. Mean moms fight hard for the hearts and futures of their children. I, for one, needed a reminder along these lines.
