Seal's journey along the famous waterway starts, appropriately, slowly. It wanders along, stopping to smell the flowers and the muck, commenting on what used to be as well as what is. I've not read anything set in Turkey that consistently, and correctly, translates the family names of the people met - I find this a winsome convention. It was helpful to have read the Arundel chronicles first. I recommend them both to anyone who loves Anatolia.

I liked it but found it light weight. I am fairly well acquainted with that part of Turkey, and could appreciate his familiarity with it, but felt that his "take" was superficial. There is lots of information about the river that he did not seem to know or take into consideration, So I would not recommend it to serious readers.

Even serious tourists could do better with other books.

The historical asides are in depth and well researched, making this more a history book than a travel book. It does meander.
