Book Description

September 1996
Seth Norman is one of America's finest sporting writers. He is the recipient of the 1998 award for best fiction by Fly Rod & Reel magazine. Here is a collection of his finest stories, including many entirely new tales never before published. Seth takes the reader way beyond mere technique, (although there is plenty to be learned by reading this book), to another level of understanding the intricate, interwoven texture of life and fishing. He will delight and surprise you with his lyrical narratives. His writing can evoke bittersweet memories and deep introspection or make you laugh out loud. You will read it over and over again. Not to be missed, this is the premier book by a singular talent in the world of sporting literature. We are very happy to offer this fine volume from a writer we will all be enjoying for many years.

"A seamless union of life, love, and fly fishing."--Steve Bodio

From the Back Cover

Crooked cops, feral pit bulls, a baby-herding border collie, fine friends, and mending hearts - they all relate to fly fishing in Seth Norman's groundbreaking collection. Brimming with pathos and laughter, Meanderings includes odes to "Women Who Fish and the Men Who Love Them" and a schizophrenic mother's love for her children that becomes manifest in the black and gold jewel of a caddis-fly case. "Jell-O is too a main dish," the author advises inner tubers towed away by striped bass; elsewhere he likens pike to gangsters.Author Seth Norman calls these stories meanderings. But there is method in his study of madness, and technique in his drift through bright riffles and deep currents. He is obsessed with waters and fish; people angle through every adventure, offering unexpected insights. A bitter woman finds heart in a boy's hope and devotion; and a late-night encounter reveals that to land a sturgeon with a 9mm pistol, you really ought to bring three clips. (6 x 9, 204 pages)

4.0 out of 5 stars Meandering Milestone, March 22, 2001
This review is from: Meanderings of a Fly Fisherman (Hardcover)
Meanderings doesn't pander to the fly fishing stereotype. That is, it doesn't pretend to elevate the status of fly fishing to the level of religion. Rather, it puts fishing at eye level and simultaneously delivers a wake-up slap to the cheeks of readers who know what it is like to be mesmerized and held spellbound by water, and sets them to drift. It forces the readers to focus on Seth's thoughts, while they meander through their own.

Seth has a true passion for fly fishing. He uses it as a "medium" through which to talk about the even greater passions of love and life.

This is a book of contemplation, a book that tells stories about the things that go on inside the mind while, or because, one fishes.

Meanderings is a tremendous read.

5.0 out of 5 stars You know HOW to fish-- do you know WHY you fish?, April 20, 2001
By
John B. Shane (Burlington, VT USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Meanderings of a Fly Fisherman (Hardcover)
Mercifully, this is NOT another "how to flyfish" book.

I am no longer interested in what others think about how to CATCH fish. I AM interested in how others approach their lives once utterly obsessed with, and immersed in, the sport. Seth Norman is one of a very (very!) few authors that are able to express a variety of facets of a life lived in the context of this, well lets face it, addiction.

Are his stories always pleasent?. No. Are they light and care-free? Not always. Are they honestly presented and gripping? Absolutly. Norman's stories are well crafted gems that weave the soul of a sport with the soul of a human.

If you want to learn how to roll cast 50 feet, don't read this book. If you want to better understand yourself, DO!

5.0 out of 5 stars Flyfishing. Friends. Humor. Pain. Ponderings. Life., December 27, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Meanderings of a Fly Fisherman (Hardcover)
Although most of the stories have flyfishing as the catalyst, the tales told from an admirable storyteller such as Seth Norman are enjoyable to everyone. The scenery. The people. The places. Everything comes alive with the richness of his words. I know the fish lust of " Esox Pike". I felt the pain of the cat as the two pit bulls were trying to rip it in half ("The Siamese Avenger", a non-fishing, but true story). Ahhh.....the strange awakening of manhood as in "Rhythm of a Woman and a Line". Stories of the weave of life that should be read and re-read and savored deeply
