Book Description

An alchemical tale exploring love, grief, and the mysteries of connection.

Scott, a CIA agent and remote viewing expert, divides his life between the U.S. and Afghanistan, ignoring the toll this takes on his marriage, his relationship with his daughter Wendell, and his own heart. Scott has secrets he has never shared with anyone, but when Wendell, a young archaeologist just out of college, suddenly rebels against his absences and takes off on a secret trip of her own, he can no longer keep the two halves of his life separate.

Things unravel as Wendell settles in Texas and discovers she is being followed. She finds notes from a mysterious man who seems to know her. Scott fears the worst: the CIA wants Wendell because of remote viewing skills she doesn't even know she has. He follows her to Texas and they go on the run together, discovering that they share more than just remote viewing skills. They share the same walled-off hearts. To open them, they must piece together a painful but redemptive puzzle of grief, love, and loss.

PRAISE FOR THE MEANING OF ISOLATED OBJECTS:

"I found this book both gripping and charming; I didn't want to put it down. It had dark moments, but the overall tone was hopeful, shining a light on love as well as on pain and dysfunction."

-Rachel Cotterill, author of REBELLION, book one in the Chronicles of Charanthe series

5.0 out of 5 stars The Meaning of Isolated Objects February 18, 2011

After reading author Billie Hinton's wonderful novel claire-obscure I couldn't wait to start The Meaning of Isolated Objects. I wasn't disappointed, Ms. Hinton is a gifted author with a way of story telling that keeps the reader interested and turning pages.

The story in this book dealt with a phenomenon that I hadn't heard of called remote viewing. As the plot revolved around a family of interesting and very real characters I learned more about how remote viewing works and the many uses it has. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a book that is different from the normal everyday fiction. The story is well thought out and well written. Thank you Ms. Hinton for entertaining me with Lynnie, Wendell, Scott and Jess.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh, unique approach to relationships January 19, 2011

The Meaning of Isolated Objects

This is the first book I read on my new Kindle and I couldn't have gotten off to a better start! So intriguing, so thought-provoking, so well-written, in fact, that I quickly bought the author's claire-obscure.claire-obscure

I was immediately drawn into the main characters of Wendell, Scott, Jess, and Lynnie and captivated by the various environments as the story progressed.

Remote viewing was a new phenomenom for me; that is, until I researched it and realized it was the clairvoyance and mental telepathy which has always fascinated me. Whether you are a believer or not, you'll enjoy this psychological/suspense/family life/adventure novel. It truly is one of those books I couldn't put down. A cliche, but so true!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book should have been a BEST-SELLER June 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was well written. The characters were very real. I got involved with this book on a very emotional level. That is how "deep" this book is. It had everything a book needs to make a person remember the book and think about it for several days. Very good book indeed. Should have been on the best-sellers list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strange but good December 2, 2012

Very different read. Very flawed characters with a unique gift (?curse) and dealing with life the only way they know how. I've read it twice and will read it again. The premise could have been more developed but it's still a book I'm glad to have ion my iPad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some amazing insights November 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Even though there were a few moments I didn't like the main character, Wendell, the book contains some amazing insights into human interactions. Over and over again I found myself highlighting parts of the text . There were things here I just didn't want to forget. Some of the language is just beautiful. Even though this is not my usual "style" of book, I was unwilling to put it down until I finished, and then was sad that it was over. Billy Hinton has gotten my attention.

3.0 out of 5 stars I wanted more from this author July 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was intrigued by the premise of this book, and love reading about archaeologists and anthropology. However, I found this aspect of the book, as well as the resolution and character development, seriously underplayed and unsatisfying. I wanted to like the characters, but their actions and the choices they made were a turnoff.
I felt the author tried to include too many subjects that needed more development and more connection with the characters and the action, and at the end of the book I had too many unanswered questions to give this review more than 3 stars, but I enjoyed it enough to finish it. I just wanted more exposition or better focus on the characters using their gifts to resolve the situation, which never quite reached the exciting climax I expected from the book's introduction.

I really wanted to like this novel, thought I would, but . . . .

I felt this story was a hodgepodge of styles: romance, family saga, a study of relationships, erotica, paranormal, even sci-fi, thriller. . . the story zinged from one genre to another like wooden balls careening across a billiard table, whacking against each other, then spinning off in other directions. The characters' flaws and one-note characterization, kept me at a distance as they tried, but failed to develop and connect with each other emotionally, and engage the reader, in any truly satisfying, believable way. In fact, at several points, they were unlikeable enough to keep each other, and me, at a distance. I wanted to care about them, but could not.

By 3/4's of the way through, I was antsy for the story to reach a climax, come to a resolution, and end. The story just kept going on and on, in more and more unbelievable, convoluted ways.

I honestly DO think this writer has potential, but, for me, it wasn't delivered in this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not All Who Wander Are Lost May 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This novel revolves around a father and his daughter, both forging ahead on separate yet parallel paths toward an inevitable collision. To be honest, this book will not be for everyone. If you are looking for a fast-paced novel, you may not enjoy this book. If you are looking for an effortless laid back novel, you may not fully appreciate this book. This is a novel overflowing with symbolism (as the title suggests); therefore, this will appeal most to readers who like to seek out deeper meanings within the novels they read. In some areas, the symbolism is obvious; in other areas it's almost poetic in it's subtle imagery and philosophical undertones. It is a slow and steady-paced read that gradually develops a strong connection between the reader and the central characters.

I felt a connection with the daughter, Wendell, almost immediately. She's always on the move; restless and unable to stay in one place for very long; continuously searching for her place in the world. I liken Wendell's character development to peeling back the layers of an onion as the author gradually takes us deeper and deeper into her most intimate thoughts. Wendell is running, but is she running away from or towards something? Her father Scott feels disconnected from his daughter's life and is determined to ensure her decisions are different than his own. He wants to shield her from the loneliness and regrets he has amassed as a result of a career that he was unwilling, and unable, to walk away from.

While the subject of "remote viewing" for the CIA is present in this novel, it is certainly not the central focus. The main theme of this novel centers around the strained relationship of a father and his daughter and their personal journeys of self-discovery.
