Coming Out of California, the band My American Heart is only a few years old, and many would consider them to be veterans of the rock scene. Playing on two North American Tours in the past year (The Vans Warped Tour, and The Taste Of Chaos Tour) the band seems to becoming ever more popular, and its about time. They're debut album, Meaning In The Makeup pumps a sound thats both orginial as well as very stylish and appreciated by fans of all types. Picture Perfect.,

This review is from: Meaning N Makeup (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
If you hated this bands earlier stuff, If you've heard bad things about this band. Forget all of that right about Now. Sal Villanueva's Production, The bands raw talent and with the help of Warcon Records and Kevin Lymnan, The Meaning in makeup is easily my favorite album of the Year. Their sound has changed, but definetly for the better. I've grown up with this band, I attended school with them, both Bell Jr. High School and Morse High School, I've seen their sound change from when they played at our school and covered Larger Then Life songs in 8th grade, to selling out shows across the nation, &It seems that with every single release their sound matures and the band finds themselves little by little.
The album has a really "retro-rock" feel, with dropped D guitars, amazingly catchy melodies that will even have Nigga Gianni or Scotty Bear singing in the showers for days on end and Larrys improved screaming, as evident in the track "We Are The Fabrication" which features Geoff Rickley of Thursday. This album delivers when It comes to music, 12 tracks, which is rare these days. We Start off with a piano intro tentively titled "The Meaning in Makeuup" which is a couple of second longs and then the album really shows you what's up with "The Process", the beats and guitar parts are not complicated at all, simple, but again, amazingly catchy. We move on to "Don't Sleep" which was originally just a demo and made it onto the full lenght. It starts out with a kick / snare drum intro that easily catches anyone attention and then the agressive guitar riffs give way to begin the song. They didn't really change the song, but the production is much better, as you can hear. "In between" is one of my favorites. Me being an old school fan that was there from day one, I noticed how MAH reused lyrics from a song on their "Certainty Kills EP" and geniously mixed it with "In between", "I see the way, you stare, so easy love and fail, skies don't bleed anymore, skies don't bleed anymore" Fits in perfectly and the lyrics are more meaningful then ever. "Runaway" is probably one of the catchiest and poppiest songs on the album, but to no avail, It's still one of my favorites. The band really knows how to make songs get stuck in your head. I've had this album about a month before the release date, &It's still in my cd player, considering how I recieve 3-4 new unreleased albums a day, and I usually get bored with them real quick, this shows a lot about the album. I do have to say something negative though, Some songs do sound a lot like the others, but this is true with many albums, like the outros and the riffs, some sound the same, either way, still an enjoyable album. "Poison" includes one of the BEST break downs I've ever heard, the best thing about it is it does not include any "typical hardcore" sour notes. All clean, and It totally brings THE ROCK, and Larrys screaming is phenomenal. My American Heart have definetly gotten a lot better at everythingn they do. I've seen this band work so hard from day one, as No Way Out, playing local shows here at churches, school lunch, Soma, Epicentre, The selah building, can't forget Canes (the big battle of the bands) and pretty much everywhere and anywhere they could book. They deserve every bit of success they are finally receiving and I think I speak for everyone here in Paradise Hills when I say, I'm DAMN PROUD. Pick up this release, don't just download it off IRC, it includes a nifty Warcon Records Promotional DVD with "The Process" music video and other cool stuff, it's only 10 bucks and in stores everywhere and you definetly won't be dissapointed, keep in mind this is a touring band on an indie label, they need gas to get to shows and food to keep them going. There is something for everyone on "The Meaning In Make Up", even my friends mom likes these songs. hahha. a CD that is worth your money..,
This review is from: Meaning N Makeup (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
If you're still debating whether you should buy this CD or not, well then, i think you should definitely buy it. My American Heart's music is original and not similar to any other band. If you've ever heard any of their earlier music, then you already know how driven and awesome this band is. Their new CD is certainly a change from their older music, but this is much better and they have taken it to the next level. These young adults are full of pure talent and they prove it through this album. From the dramatic intro/song..all the way to the climactic end of the CD, it makes you beg for more. With catchy guitar rhythms, deep bass melodies, unique vocals, and solid drum beats, this Debut LP will not leave you unsatisfied. The lyrics are full of raw emotion that you can feel. Even if you are not a fan of this genre, this CD and this band will change your ways.

I like this name more then when they were "No Way Out" but...,

I wish they didn't get mainstreem and start produceing this only half way decent music. It listenable, but not up to par with what they used to produce in the begining when they were No Way Out, and the early days of MAH.
My faviort track on this cd is "In Between", but only because it is just "Busses and Blogs" from the Certainty Kills EP remade. and I also wish he didn't start getting vocal lessions cause I love how orginal his orginal voice was, before he got skilled. Overall it is deffantly a great buy but only if you have never heard there stuff before this album. -If you have heard there stuff before this album I suggest you borrow a friends and give it a quick listen before you make the desicion on makeing a purchase. If no one you know has it, sample the songs. PEACE!

Extraordinary CD and Band! Highly Recommended!,

Once I saw MAH at Warped Tour I was baffled by their off the wall sound. I stood there commenting to my friend about them and how great they sounded. Since then I waited for the day for the CD to come out and listened to their other great songs. TMIM is a stunning album that will surely give your ears a melodic remedy. The song "Don't Sleep" and "In Between" are some of my favorites. MAH is a band that I can enjoy and relate to, I am in complete envy of them for their musical talent. I am especially fond of that some band members are part Filipino and I also have the same last name as one of them haha.
Alright all said and done, MAH definetly needs more attention and you should definetly check them out and support them! Take a listen, you wont regret.

These Guys Rock...,
By Tony Sicilia (Greenville, NC USA) - See all my reviews

These guys are bringing the Rock to the table. If you're down with checking out new music, My American Heart is a group to check out. I don't like saying "oh this band sounds like so and so", each band has there own style with there own original sound like My American Heart. There Chorus's are catchy; they're inviting you to sing along to every song. My favorite song would have to be, "Runaway". I'm not much of a reviewer, but hands down, "The Meaning in Makeup" is a great album from start to finish.

One Of The Best....,

The My American Heart CD, The Meaning In Makeup is phenomenal! Its one of the best I have heard in a long time. I was jamming to it before it even hit stores and it hasn't left my CD player since I have gotten it. Their music is amazing and their songs reflect what teenagers know because they aren't that high in age themselves. I can relate to their music as well as many other can. These boys really know the true meaning of how to make one rock. I must say The Meaning In Makeup is one of the best birthday presents I have ever gotten. I don't think anyone in their right mind would regret buying this CD unless they are down right insane.
