This text explores the variety of meanings that mental illness or "madness" can possess. It takes into account the current move to expand the traditional biomedical paradigm to include social and cultural factors in the diagnosis of mental disorders. This text can serve as a companion volume for the textbook "Culture and Mental Illness" also by Richard J. Castillo, as a main text, or in conjunction with other works on the subject. The 27 articles provide illustrations, examples, or case studies of the topics or disorders discussed in Castillo's main text. Most of the articles are based on ethnographic research or case studies and have appeared in journals of psychiatry, neuroscience, anthropology, and psychology.
