Book Description

October 15, 2008

A celebrated writer and celebrator of writers tells what has shaped her life and career

For the longest time, Teresa Miller wanted to get as far from Oklahoma as possible—to escape from her distant father and abusive stepmother, from the ache of her mother’s death, and from the small-town insularity of Tahlequah. She longed for New York and Hollywood, for all the glamorous settings that transcended grief—at least on television.

Miller never made it out of Oklahoma permanently, though she came to treasure the region that kept her heart anchored even as her spirit cast far and wide. In Means of Transit—A Slightly Embellished Memoir, Miller writes of journeys that turned into life-altering experiences as she learned to “story” her way beyond the impasses. Still other trips, begun with great promise, found her wandering through confusing back roads, relying on more seasoned storytellers for direction. Eventually she established a literary center simply by reaching out to such authors as Jim Lehrer, Maya Angelou, and Isabel Allende, fellow travelers who taught her as much about life as about writing.

The author takes readers from her early childhood, to a short stint in a New York acting school, to the writing of her first novel, and the painful decades of writer’s block that followed its publication. We also learn of the author’s terrifying encounter with a stalker, a dark sort of Everyman who personified her late-night suspicions about even the people closest to her.

Told with humor, candor, and the same haunting lyricism that distinguished her early work, Miller’s story is about learning the ultimate life lesson—that when we do lose our way, our hearts can guide us.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A deeply moving, uncompromisingly honest memoir. Every reader will come away enriched by the story Teresa Miller tells. This is first-rate autobiographical narrative." -- N. Scott Momaday, Pulitzer-winning author of House Made of Dawn.

"Like all great memoirs, Teresa Miller's Means of Transit takes us on a deep journey during the writer's emotional roller coaster ride to a rich emotional life. The dilemma of family both tortures and exalts her, the way it does all of us." -- Pat Conroy, author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini.

"Teresa Miller is a unique voice in the world of American letters, one to be treasured and embraced." -- Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey, author of A Women of Independent Means.

"With humor, honesty, and elegance, Teresa Miller's `slightly embellished memoir,' tells of a life, sometimes tinged with tragedy, that triumphs in the world of books." -- Earl Hamner, creator of The Waltons and author of Spencer's Mountain.

Means of Transit is a story for all of us who have wanted to leave home but found ourselves pulled back again and again, until we discover that the journey is home, and that's where we're meant to be. It's also a story for those of us who have lost our way, wandered in the wilderness, abandoned early dreams for later ones, and followed new directions that have taken us from the beaten track. Miller's graceful and compassionate memoir invites us into a life lived interestingly, deeply, and richly in place. -- Reviewed by Susan Wittig Albert for Story Circle Book Reviews

"Ms. Miller's writing is as sweetly unembellished as the red Okie plains. Her dead-on storyteller instincts were honed through writing two novels (many years apart, as Means of Transit relates), as well as stints in journalism and acting." --Joy Tipping with The Dallas Morning News

More About the Author

While still in her twenties, Teresa Miller, living in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, literally became one of the luckiest writers in the world. A top New York literary agent randomly picked her historical novel from a slush pile, then sold the manuscript to a major New York publisher. The novel, REMNANTS OF GLORY, caught the attention of such luminaries as writing guru John Gardner and acclaimed short story author Alice Munro. But Miller, waging a private battle with depression, developed an eighteen year writer's block that kept her from fulfilling her literary potential--at least as a writer.

Instead, she transformed her own passion for storytelling into an appreciation for the work of other authors, establishing a literature center that, despite GRAPES OF WRATH stereotypes, attracted many of the world's leading writers to Oklahoma. Miller also became executive host and producer of the public television program, WRITING OUT LOUD. Now entering its tenth season on OETA, Oklahoma's PBS affiliate, the show has featured Miller's interviews with many of the country's leading writers and performers, including Dave Barry, Elmore Leonard, Frank McCourt, Amy Tan, David McCullough, Tony Hillerman, Pat Conroy, Anne Lamott, Isabel Allende, Ken Burns, and Lynn Redgrave. Many of the interviews are available on line at writetv.org.

Based at Oklahoma State University in Tulsa, where she also teaches a popular writing class, Miller has recently rediscovered her own voice. Described by PBS anchor Jim Lehrer as a "novelist of superb skills," she has written another novel, FAMILY CORRESPONDENCE, and she published her "slightly embellished memoir," MEANS OF TRANSIT, in September, 2008. The memoir speaks to the long, silent passages many of us have faced in our own lives. She is currently at work on a sequel to FAMILY CORRESPONDENCE.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Memoir worth Reading, February 24, 2009
This review is from: Means of Transit: A Slightly Embellished Memoir (Hardcover)
This book was a joy to read, full of Teresa's southern humor and her honest portrayal of a southern family, full of love and drama, tragedy and triumph. We understand both Teresa's dream of leaving Oklahoma and the strong ties that keep her there. The book brought tears and laughter, and a sense of family, with all of its flaws and imperfections, yet still tied together with love and hope for reconcilliation and joy. She gives us a glimpse of her enormous gift for bringing some of the greatest literary talents of our time together with those who love to read, and we are heartened by her success!

While I am not normally a big fan of memoirs, this one kept me interested enough to read it in one night. It is witty, honest, and involved enough to keep the pages turning. Miller has captured bits of life's truthes between the covers of this book.
