Book Description

Sometimes the next best thing is what you’ve been looking for all along…

Beth Chandler has spent her whole life pleasing others. She went to law school to make her grandparents happy. She agreed to marry her workaholic boyfriend, Lucas, to make him happy. And, despite her fear of boats, she took a ferry to see Lucas’s parents just to make them happy.

While suffering through a panic attack on the ferry, Beth meets a tall, sexy stranger who talks her down from her fear—and makes her heart flutter in the process. Soon, she has a new reason to panic: her gorgeous, blue-eyed rescuer is Lucas’s brother, Joe. But could she ever leave her fiancé for his own brother…even if Lucas is more focused on making partner than on making their relationship work…and even if Joe turns out to be everything she never knew she wanted?

Filled with excitement and delight, Meant to Be is the story of a young woman torn between urban pressures and small-town pleasures.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Beth Chandler is deathly afraid of the water, so ferrying over to Anchor Island off the coast of North Carolina to meet her fiancé's family is a big deal until a huge dog and his very attractive owner distract her. When she realizes the guy is her fiancé's brother, Beth is too embarrassed to introduce herself. Of course, all is revealed when Joe Dempsey arrives at this parents' home to greet Lucas and Elizabeth. A difficult case drags Lucas back to Richmond, but he insists that Beth continue their "vacation," with Joe as her guide. Charter boat captain Joe isn't thrilled with the idea, but he doesn't want to "rock the boat." Beth discovers that she loves this wonderful enclave of small businesses and its quirky neighbors, so helping the residents fight overtures from a developer to sell gives her purpose. Meanwhile, Beth and Joe seem have found common ground.

Verdict An introspective man falls for a woman who has made a career out of fulfilling everyone's needs but her own. The combination of beautiful island locale and offbeat characters will have readers setting sail for love in debut author Osburn's series opener. —Bette-Lee Fox

"[This] debut novel is as inviting as digging your bare toes into warm sand. Filled with endearing, authentic characters, heart-tugging emotion, and just enough laugh-out-loud moments to keep you smiling...a delightful story." —Tracy Brogan, bestselling author of Crazy Little Thing

5.0 out of 5 stars Will Steal Your Heart May 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Elizabeth Chandler has spent her life pleasing other people and living other people's dreams. She's a lawyer because that's the respectable career path the grandparents who raised her wanted for her. Her workaholic fiancé has no idea what she likes or dislikes because he makes all the decisions in their relationship right down to the type of wine she drinks and music she listens to and because it makes him happy, she lets him. She's suppressed every ounce of young Beth Chandler's creativity and zest for life in an effort to be what everyone expects her to be. But that's all about to change.

Only for Lucas Dempsey would Elizabeth Chandler, a woman deathly afraid of the water, be on a ferry to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to meet her new fiancé's family. Lucas was supposed to be with her but, once again, the law office where they both work has taken priority and left Elizabeth to make the crossing on her own. She's in the midst of a full-blown panic attack when an over-sized dog and his gorgeous owner come to her rescue. Charmed in spite of herself, by both this man and his dog, she introduces herself as Beth and allows herself to secretly indulge in the instant attraction she feels to this calm, sexy man with the adorable dimple. Then she discovers he's her future brother-in-law.

Joe Dempsey has a mental image of the woman his younger step-brother is bringing home and it sure isn't a sweet, sexy young woman who makes his own pulse race. They get off on the wrong foot and the instant attraction that sparks between them doesn't help matters but gradually, as they get to know one another, their feelings begin to shift and then deepen though they both fight it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect! In every way! May 26, 2013
By Vicki J
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was looking for something light and fun to read. I loved this story and couldn't put it down. The opening drew me in and I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I giggled my way through the "girls night out." I really liked Beth and wouldn't mind being her friend. Joe is - a girl's dream - sexy, caring in a gruff way, loyal to family, and friendly (crabby sort of friendly). I want to be part of the Dempsey family and can't wait to read Ms. Osborn's next story about Lucas, Joe's brother. Thanks, Ms. Osborn, for a truly entertaining read.

1.0 out of 5 stars modern romance? June 1, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I couldn't get past the first few chapters of this book because I was so put off by the amount of swearing in it. Really, is it necessary to have the F-bomb in nearly every paragraph in order to be consider a writer of contemporary romance? This kind of writing only debases the fundamental beauty of romance. A writer can certainly up date the fairy tale aspects of the romance genre without resorting to cheap sensationalism. A good writer would not have to resort to such a tactic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just a predictable romance August 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although Meant to Be was entertaining, it was predictable with all of the boxes checked to qualify as a romance novel. The price was right and it provided a few hours of distraction.
