Editorial Reviews

Review

"A RIVETING THRILLER. MOVE OVER CLANCY AND CHILD!" -- Kirkus Reviews

"Measure of Danger blends intelligence ops, frightening technology and corporate intrigue in an inventive thriller that tightens its grip with each page. The plot will keep you guessing, but it's the equally unpredictable Kade Sims who makes this adventure such a fun one." -- Bob Mayer, New York Times Bestselling Author

"Strong characterization, a sense of place and purpose, and an evolving technological threat together make Measure of Danger a strong recommendation for any reader of high-technology thrillers; especially prior fans of Tom Clancy, Jack Higgins, Robin Cook and others writing in this vein." -- Diane Donovan, Midwest Book Review

"Measure of Danger becomes so enthralling that it's hard to believe Jay Klages hasn't been publishing military thrillers for years." -- Red City Review

"Measure of Danger, Jay Klages' debut novel is a page-turning techno-thriller written by a former military intelligence officer and a West Point graduate. Klages' experience and expertise is revealed with his believable dialog, details, and operative descriptions...thriller readers will be glued to the pages to find out what happens next as the plot twists and spins with unrelenting action and surprise as the pieces and clues come together." -- Chanticleer Book Reviews

"The plot will keep readers riveted with lots of twists, turns, action and thrills." -- Readers' Favorite

From the Author

I set out to write a different kind of technothriller--one that's fun and fast-paced but doesn't require a glossary. I wanted a different kind of main character--not the typical bulletproof thriller protagonist, but one who's more believable in facing the tremendous challenges around him. And most importantly, I wanted an innovative story that will leave the reader thinking long after the last page. I hope you enjoy it! --JK

5.0 out of 5 stars A suspense filled page turner.. November 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A few days before a cross country work trip a friend of my suggested I read Measure of Danger written by a newcomer named Jay Klages. The description of the book as well as the author's bio intrigued me, so I downloaded the book onto my Kindle prior to my flight. That purchase turned out to be a great decision…

I typically judge a book by the how far I get into a cross country flight before lose interest and put my Kindle down to watch a movie, or sleep. On the rare occasion I read the entire book during my flight I usually end up giving the book a five star review. Long story short, I did not put down Measure of Danger the entire flight. I could not wait to turn last page to see how the story ended... What happens to Kade? What is AgriteX up to? I simply had to know, so there was no way I was going to stop reading.

Klages develops the characters in a way that makes the story easy to follow and I am certain his military intelligence background assisted in the detailed research necessary to make the story plausible.

If you want a true page turner, do yourself a favor and download this book. I hope Klages gets to work soon on a second effort.. I can't wait to read it!

As someone who loved the Vince Flynn books, I had high expectations for this story and wasn’t disappointed.

Our main character, Kade, accepts a position to gain info on a notorious group. It seemed like a fairly easy job (as far as projects like this one go) but Kade soon finds himself immersed in a situation with a group of very unpredictable people. You can cut the suspense with a knife and I found myself holding my breath a few times.

This is a well written book with plenty of detail, action and suspense.

I definitely liked the author’s writing style and recommend this fast paced read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Christmas Gift! December 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I began reading Tom Clancy well after he was famous. I began Jack Higgins years after his first hit. What would it be like to start fresh with a new author and get excited about a thrilling future? Enter Jay Klages with "Measure of Danger".

Finally, we all have a change to watch a new author rise to success and provide years of entertainment...just in time for Christmas. Mr. Klages has provided a gripping thriller that balances the right amount of science-fiction and realistic tactical detail which must be based on real-life experience. The character development is solid which leads to an ending that engages the reader and makes sense.

Whether you're looking for an exciting read for yourself or the avid reader in your life, I highly recommend "Measure of Danger" and I look forward to his next offering.

This techno-thriller pitches “The Chapter,” a high-tech, well-organized, and ruthless para-military organization, against a former intelligence officer with a behavioral disorder that makes him an unpredictable anomaly to all sides.

In “Measure of Danger" by Jay Klages, The Chapter has infiltrated every level of government, and their funder, a drug cartel, has upped the ante and their demands. The United States is in imminent danger, but no one knows from whom or from what, and the clock is ticking.

Kade Sims feels he has been unfairly dumped from his former position in Army Intelligence because of out-of-control behavior due to a condition called hypomania. He’s bored, out of shape, and stuck working part-time at Home Depot instead of at the Pentagon. So when the FBI knocks on his door of his Virginia apartment and asks him to go undercover in Oregon to infiltrate a mysterious quasi-militia group called The Chapter, he’s eager to go to work for his country again.

His training goes well, but on his initial scouting mission into The Chapter’s territory, the plan goes awry when his Jeep hurtles off a muddy mountain road. Kade wakes up strapped to a bed in The Chapter’s compound. He is now inside The Chapter sooner and with a lot less control than he or the FBI planned. To make matters worse, his brutal guards know not only who he is, but where his beloved sister goes to school. When they can’t break him, they decide to use his skills to their advantage, confident they can control him at every step with a computer chip they implanted into his head.

But Kade’s hypomania proves to be a benefit when it gives him resistance to The Chapter’s hi-tech mind-control methods.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kade Sims is the Jack Ryan of this generation October 27, 2013
By Nahuel
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is a superb thriller in the Clancy tradition: A plot that weaves together a number of current events, detailed research into technology and the intractable inner workings of the US government, and a tragically flawed hero whose commitment to his mission and his country get him in over his head again and again.

Sims is the Millennial version of Jack Ryan, a medicated genius working in a dead-end job who steps up and saves his country from a threat that none of the alphabet soup of three-letter Federal agencies fully understand. You can't help but root for him as he works himself out of one mess after another while solving the bigger puzzle.

Klages' fluid prose adds wonderful detail to the story without slowing down the pace. He drops the enough plot clues to keep the reader mentally engaged while withholding enough to keep the pages turning and ensure that the ending is a surprise. You'll be hard-pressed to put this book down once you pick it up.

There is tremendous potential here in the Kade Sims franchise. I look forward to the sequel with great anticipation!

A good, light, action-packed page turner. Could use a little better editing but that didn't detract from the plot. Culmination could have been developed a bit more.
