5.0 out of 5 stars OKE'S MOST SPIRITUALLY EDIFYING BOOK EVER!
This is, in my opinion, the most spiritually edifying book I have ever read that is ficton. The main character is humble and submissive and a TRUE Christian. She is innocent and naive, yet mature. I wish I could be more like her. I feel like I KNOW her, too. A very good book for ALL AGES. You must read it. It will change your life by drawing you closer to God...

I'm surprised by all of the raving reviews this book got, aside from one other person I guess I'm the only one who found it very depressing. Anna's lack of self esteem and overdone humility got very old after the first few chapters, it almost got to the point of pride it was so bad. And then her husband never gave her much credit for any of her really good ideas that...

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book Ever!, December 18, 1999
I read this book when I was really down in the dumps. Life was going wrong. After I read it, I felt so awesome that I bought myself a copy! I want to be a missionary when I grow up, so this also helped me in that area! It is a great book! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book by Janette Oke, October 20, 1999

This book is especially good because it shows the miraculous things that the Lord can do with a humble heart. For example there is is very good part about befriending someone that does everything to discourage friendship. I also very much enjoyed the author's attempt at showing the particular challenges of dealing with addiction. Although not dealt with in much depth, there is wisdom in what is portrayed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, October 3, 2004

This review is from: The Measure of a Heart (Women of the West #6) (Paperback)
The Measure Of A Heart, by Janette Oke is truly inspirational. She uses the character Anna Trent as an example to all Christians. She is introduced in the beginning of the book as a young, intelligent, six-teen year old farm girl. Throughout the book she grows into a wonderful Christian women, whom most readers would respect after finishing. Anna is innocent and selfless. When she decides to accept the role of being a minister's wife by marrying Austin Baker, she feels tremendously inadequate. Anna has a constant battle by questioning her good deeds, decisions, motherhood, and weather or not she does the title of minister's wife justice. She does the title more than justice! In fact, I wish that everyone could handle situations and treat others as she does. When conflicts arise not only does Anna have to deal with those circumstances, but also a second struggle follows, herself. She is extremely insecure. It is not until later in the book that she finally discovers that all her efforts are significant. I would highly recommend this book, because it offers a new perspective on life. Anna's selflessness makes the reader consider their priorities. Her first and foremost desire is to please God by doing her job sufficiently. I agree with Anna's desire, and this is probably the reason why I loved this book so much! Janette Oke is a talented author. I like the ideas and thoughts that she expresses through the context. After reading The Measure Of A Heart, I am excited to read more of her work!

Janette Oke in this book is wonderful. She places infront of me the examples I need to know. All of us need to know. most people in this world today would not be such wonderful examples. I do not know of many myself. Showing me the way to see the positive in the negative, I find that this is a very special book, indeed.

2.0 out of 5 stars A downer, June 28, 2011
I'm surprised by all of the raving reviews this book got, aside from one other person I guess I'm the only one who found it very depressing. Anna's lack of self esteem and overdone humility got very old after the first few chapters, it almost got to the point of pride it was so bad. And then her husband never gave her much credit for any of her really good ideas that helped people in their town, that bugged me. For all the value and interest he gave her before they married, afterwards he seemed to totally take her for granted. He was unaffectionate, remiss in his family duties and a lousy provider. It's one thing for an author to illustrate struggles and being poor but even at the end of the book nothing was much better for them. The part that made me the most mad was when Anna wouldn't allow a confrontation or lawsuit on that Carl guy for his hogs getting out and eating up her much needed garden. She'd rather be "righteous" than feed her two children and her hungry family. God kept providing, but the good Lord also calls us to use wisdom in our daily lives to improve our condition, we shouldn't be having to live from miracle to miracle. I was quite annoyed by the end of the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars an absolute favourite, January 1, 2009
By
this book was well-written, tender, exciting and everything else janette oke's books usually are. but on top of it all, it is deeply soul-searching and insightful. it deals with the subject of self-esteem and self-approval. it shows how God intends us to look upon ourselves and everything He has made us to be. to look upon ourselves and thank Him for making us what we are. to accept ourselves as He accepts us. i cried and cried and still cry every time i reread it (a lot of times, believe me). tears of relief. God truly blessed me by this book. i hope He will touch you too.
