The Measure of a Man is a 1974 book on Christian living by Gene A. Getz. Here, Getz briefly explores twenty criteria for godly character listed by Paul in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1. Paul was writing with respect to church leaders, and Getz is specifically addressing men, but the principles here are for all Christians.

In The Measure of a Man, Getz has devoted one chapter to each of Paul's twenty criteria. These are short chapters: three to six pages discussing the characteristic followed by a couple pages of self-evaluation questions and ways to improve. What Getz has to say is generally good, but brief; it's enough to make the open-minded reader consider his behavior, but for serious growth in most any of these areas, the reader will want to move on to other, more in-depth resources, and perhaps, in some cases, counseling.

Theologically, The Measure of a Man is has no major red flags. Getz has obvious fundamentalist/Pentecostal beliefs, but there's nothing discussed here that should turn off Christians of other flavors. And since nothing here is explored in terribly great depth, the book's ecumenical appeal is undamaged.

The Measure of a Man is a short, fast read that should, at the least, inspire some self-reflection in any Christian who's honest with himself.

I purchased this book as part of an effort to start a men's bible study group. I must say, I can't keep copies. It is simple in concept and scripturally based. Every turn of the page is filled with a moment that makes you go aha, hmmm, or ouch. The book also includes questions that make for good bible study discussion questions and challenge each participate to engage their own efforts to be Godly.

If you are starting a Men's Bible study or are new to spiritual leadership, I strongly encourage this book. The only caveat is that you must engage each chapter's challenges. Each chapter will challenge you to work on those areas where you may have spiritual weaknesses. It will require an honest assessment of your spiritual strengths and challenges and provide directions to take as part of your growth and progress. If you are ready for that challenge, or are starting a Men's Bible Study or have men new to ministry or leadership, this is a good book. Buy lots of copies though.

Should be required reading and study for all men who have ever wondered what in this life they should be. This guide full of instruction and study is based on principals of manliness contained within the word of truth. If you believe that the Bible is the infallible written word of God. Then what Gene Getz has discerned from scripture and presented here is an acceptable way to developed into the kind of man that would, when put into practice, bring glory to God.

This book is one of the best books concerning Christian men that I've ever read. It outlines the attributes necessary for us as men required to be all the Lord requires of us. A must reading for all Christian men.

The Measure of a Man is a fast read that expands on the characteristics of a leader mentioned in Paul's letters to Timothy and Titus. Together with the workbook and video series on the topic, I believe it enhances our growth as Christian men and moves us along our journey toward becoming the men God created us to be.

Excellent book for a Men's group! We have begone to open up and share our inner most passion for Christ by understanding the need to be committed to God and hold ourselves accountable to His Word. This book allowed us to move past ourselves and our inadequacies and look to God for our value system and our need to truly develope as Men of God.

I chose this book as a study for our men's group. It has proven to be a valuable tool in helping men grow spiritually. Great book from a great pastor.

There are three books that I have not been able to keep in my library. They are, The Measure of a Man, The Measure of a Church and Building Up One Another. Each of them was penned by Gene Getz. Early in my preparation for the ministry I read The Measure of a Man when I learned that Gene was scheduled to speak in the church I was attended at the time. Within a year's time, he was back twice more, and I read "Church" and "Building" prior to each visit. Soon after his third visit a new church was born based on the principles that Gene had taught from the Word of God. Thirty-four years later that church is still reaching its community and building disciples, though, without me. In those years though I have given many of the copies that I purchased were not for me but for men whom I had the privilege of training or influencing through the churches that I sered or the prison at which I have been the Protestant Chaplain for almost 16 years. Not one single copy was wasted on the individuals that received them.

Recently, I recommended the trilogy of books to a former inmate who was deported to South America following his parole. He then recommended them to a group of men he was ministering with in Bogota, Columbia. Through the study of these books, they gained new understanding on God's standard for an Elder in the Body of Christ, His standard for the local Body of Christ and the emphasis of the ministry within the Body of Christ. That study has led to a solid foundation for a church in one of the most dangerous cities in the Americas as well as an area that is dominated by churches where New Testament freedom from the Law is not understood.

Any man who is preparing for a life of the ministry read these three great books and learn the heart of Dr. Gene Getz. that following his Biblical guidance and partnering with others in the local Body of Christ your ministry will be long and soulishly, spiritually rewarding.

A great book for helping yourself and other men to become real men of god that He meant us to be.

This book is fantastic. Our men's discussion group is using it to discover how to become the "Man of God" that He has created all of us to be. I've invited all of the men who attend to join me on what should be a great adventure. We are excited about what God has to tell us through this book.
