Undiscovered Treasure from P.F. Sloan,
By
This review is from: Measure for Pleasure (Audio CD)
Years ago I ran used record shop and one day this album was offered to me to buy. I had never seen it before, and I have never seen the lp since. But I bought it and played it in-store and found out that it was a truly remarkable, enjoyable, but almost impossible to describe, musical achievement. I recorded it (on reel-to-reel tape) and then sold the lp, but kept the tape, transferring it to cassette and finally to CD. When I saw it for sale through Collector's Choice Music, I basically fell over, ordered it immediately and have never regretted it.I knew P.F. Sloan for his obvious hits, "Eve of Distruction," "Secret Agent Man," and so forth. "Measure of Pleasure" is not anything like his earlier songs, no 2-minute 50-second hit formats here. Instead, there are rather free-form, almost rambling songs but they are full of delightful hooks, great melodic turns and memorable playing. (Keeping with the mysterious-ness of this album, there are no musician credits except a mention of some participation by guitar legend Steve Cropper.) So, if you like P.F. Sloan at all, buy this CD. If you like good melodies and excellent playing and are willing to take a chance on a somewhat undefinable format, buy this CD.

P.F. Sloan is one of the great talents in the music world. Often overlooked he brings a clarity and simplicity to the listener that is rare. Measurer of Pleasure highlights some of P.F. Sloan's lesser known songs and it's a worthwhile acquisition to any music collection.
