5.0 out of 5 stars Foundation for a Control Systems Engineer
I'm in the process of preparing to take the Principles and Practices Exam for Control Systems Engineering. I studied Electrical Engineering in college and have worked mostly with distributed/digital controls since then. I have performed little to no valve sizing or instrument selection.

I purchased this book to lay the foundation for the things I did not...

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs Improvement, May 22, 2009
This review is from: Measurement and Control Basics, 4th Edition (Paperback)
Good coverage of process control/loops and most measurement sensors/fundamentals, especially analytical instruments. Electrical theory needs to include basic electronics. Too many equations and impractical examples, many errors including temperature conversion equation and RTD Alpha units and Boolean logic sysmbols drawn as squares. Poor and inaccurate coverage of gauge and absolute pressure. No mention of pneumatics, IR thermometers, 4-20mA scaling, and calibration.

I'm in the process of preparing to take the Principles and Practices Exam for Control Systems Engineering. I studied Electrical Engineering in college and have worked mostly with distributed/digital controls since then. I have performed little to no valve sizing or instrument selection.

I purchased this book to lay the foundation for the things I did not learn in school and have not practiced at work (instruments and valves).

This book is simple to read and provides the right amount of detail for teaching the Basics. I reviewed this book before taking an ISA CSE PE review course. Measurement and Control Basics provided enough knowledge so that I did not look completely clueless during the review course.

This book will not provide you with all the knowledge to prepare for the CSE PE exam, but it will get you started. I recommend reading this book, and then taking an ISA review course to identify other areas you need to study before the exam.

This review is from: Measurement and Control Basics, 4th Edition (Paperback)
The selection of this book as a text for an instrument course is a good one. It covers the broad area of measuring instrumentation and process control and covers it extremely well.
