5.0 out of 5 stars Varied and simple recipies December 11, 2005
Format:Paperback
If you like meatless burgers this book will show you how to make ones as good as the ones in the store, but that are significantly cheaper. The recipes are easy and quick. Nutrition information is included. The are a variety of recipes for using soy, wheat gluten, beans, grains, or vegetables to make burgers. If you have a problem with a particular ingredient you will find at least a few recipes that avoid using that ingredient. Included are recipes for side dishes. It is not high cuisine, but the recipes in this book are satisfying, tasty, easy and cheap.

In Meatless Burgers, vegetarian cook Louise Hagler demonstrates how easy and economical it is to make one of America's most popular foods. An assortment of beans, grains, and vegetables are transformed into tender, juicy, delicious, and satisfying burgers that are low in fat and high in fiber. Burgers are not only a great way to add soyfoods to the vegetarian diet, but an easy means of getting fussy meat eaters to consume their vegetables instead. From Black Ben Burgers, Sunflower-Brown Rice Burgers, and Soy Protein-Tofu Burgers, to Deviled Tempeh Burgers, Beet Burgers, and Middle Eastern Sesame Burgers, Meatless Burgers offers over fifty quick and easy recipes that are as taste satisfying as they are nutritious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meatless Burgers Awesome! August 28, 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the tops in my kitchen. I've even bought one for several of our vegetarian friends. Fanstastic variety of natural homemade vege patties. No more store bought vege protein for us. Natural, even the children can make these, they are great, we love the black bean and rice patties, those are so delicious add some Braggs Aminos and whatever you like really. Great, easy, fun. I highly triple A recommend this book to all of you who like to make it yourself at home! Save a ton of money too!

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost But Not Quite...Other Alternative Better October 8, 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased several of these vegie burger books including this one and "vegetarian burgers"...this is a good book but could have been much better for several reasons - first, the author reies heavily on soy. I rarely use soy simply because I'm not a huge fan of the flavor however, it is often genetically modified and tends to act/interfere with hormone levels in some sensitive individuals so I'm sure there are others that are not huge soy fans other than myself. However, the soy reliance alone is not my "big beef" with this book...rather the inclusion of inferior ingredients found in many of the recipes is. While I realize many vegetarians have no problems putting all types of chemicals or other adulturants into their bodies as long as it isn't animal based, there are plenty of other people such as myself that avoid highly procesed, chemically tained products whenever possible. Sadly, this book includes many 'short cut' ingredients of dubious quality that are never found in my kitchen.

For those searching for one good book, try "vegetarian burgers", it includes a wider variety of grain, beans and other ingredients aside from soy. The author also uses fresh ingredients and very few processed seasonings or other "junk" in the recipes. It is simply beyond me why so many other authors take a nutritious food then add inferior ingredients to the recipe. NO _I AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH EITHER AUTHOR!!! Just a person that spent money on two books rather than one and hopes to help others avoid making the same mistake.

That having been said, the author does assume you are starting from canned beans and other sources rather than grinding your own or starting from fresh.

1.0 out of 5 stars this book was given away August 12, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love a good veggie burger, and make all sorts. I am always out for new recipes, and constantly experimenting with things. So when i saw this book, i thought i would give it a try.
Traditionally i have classified veggie burgers into 2 realms, those that taste like meet, but dont have the consistency, and those that feel like meet but dont taste like it.
This book creates neither.... I have never done so much work, and gotten such odd ingredients for such a rotten return.
If you are not a vegetarian, but rather a carnivore looking for an alternative to a regular hamburger, I would suggest looking elsewhere. The burgers in this book just don't cut it.
