5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Game! A must play!
I originally would have given it four stars, but I got the new enhanced Battlepack version and decided to give it five because it now has better graphics. It's got a great plotline and it is easy to maneuver a mech. 3.0 out of 5 stars MW2 is great -- but this version is stripped!
As a huge fan of Mechwarrior, I want to set a few things straight. This game is really awesome -- but the Softkey version isn't!

Basically, this is a cheap, stripped down version that I don't suggest to anyone. And thus, it gets a 3 overall for tricking people. Get the version that was not offered in a standalone jewel case.

People who like this should get the awesome MECHWARRIOR 2: TITANIUM STAND ALONE because its not a cheap remake with better graphics as so many people think because of similar box covers but its not. Its a different game because there's more missions and 40 mechs to choose from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, January 30, 2001

Ancient, long-awaited, and familiar nowadays as the game that was bundled with more first-generation 3D cards than any other (even PowerVR!), 'Mechwarrior 2' started off a mini-wave of big robot games but, apart from maybe 'Terra Nova', it was always the best - it's interesting to note that 'Mechwarrior 3' was essentially an inferior remake, but with updated graphics. A neat blend of arcade action, depth, and striking polygonal graphics (with a little, exploratory texture-mapping), it also benefits from an extremely atmospheric musical score and a genuine feeling of being in a giant robot, stomping around, whereas the contemporary 'Earthseige' games gave the impression that you were gliding over the terrain. How it fits in the modern gaming world is another thing, though. If you can see beyond the graphics, which are stylish but functional, it's still quite good fun to play, and cheap too. There are plenty of missions (another thing lacking in 'Mechwarrior 3') divided into two campaigns, and if you buy the Titanium Edition you get the 'Ghost Bear's Legacy' expansion pack. It works well enough on a P200, and it's amusing to note that the 'full installation' option takes up a grand total of 70mb, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best MechWarrior ever, July 3, 2001

This was THE first game I ever got for my computer. I was only 10 at the time, but it sucked me in and I could not stop playing it. I wish I could play it again, but my new computer won't let me install it for some reason. A classic game, one of the best. The storyline is amazing, even without speech and many videos. The Mechlab was great, it had such a variety of weapons to choose from and all of the classic Mechs. And the graphics were to drool for at the time. They are considered very polygonial now, but at the time they were great.

One of my favorite games of all time.

This version has the NONenhanced graphics. There are many 3D enhanced versions, but many are chipset specific. Make sure to get the generic versions of this. The Titanium editions are the "best" graphically. Unforunately, if you purchase the standalone, most of the music and many of the mechs (and even their artwork) will be missing. This is especially apparent in the Ghost Bear Legacy version.

The best bet is to get the box set, which is retailing from 80 to 180 USD as of the time of this review. If you want to look elsewhere, you can sometimes find a similar UK boxed set for about 20 USD (not the Netmech package -- this package will NOT be compatible with any other packages).

Oh and one last thing -- if you have anything better than Windows ME on your system, you can't run this. Don't even bother trying.

The easiest solution to this besides building a terrible outdated PC for about 100 USD, is to download the free Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 and set up an install of Windows 98SE. If you want to use the graphics accelerated versions however, you'll need get VMWare which supports D3D graphics -- unfortunately, the version that works with Windows 98 is not yet out (VMWare Workstation 6). So as of right now, there aren't many other options, unless you'd like to dual boot or buy an old PC.

Best of luck finding the version of Mechwarrior 2 that you want!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice game and concept, March 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: MechWarrior 2 (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
I got this game shortly after it came out in 1995, played it for a while, and then put it down for several years. I just started playing it again (2003), and I am still impressed with the concept of mechanized warfare in various sci-fi terrains. Though everything about it is dated, the game is well crafted and has many moments of excitement. You can customize many features on your mech, and the difficulty level increases in an appropriate way. The AI is also fairly intelligent, and opponents know when to fly and sneak up on you at the right times. It has a somewhat steep learning curve for controling the mech, and many players will find themselves referring to the manual to control things such as turrent rotation, firing various weapons, lighting, and commands to allies. For the low price that it can currently be had for, this is a bargain and should provide many hours of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best games ever, April 4, 2001
This review is from: MechWarrior 2 (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
when i got my computer (finally) this was one of the first games i got. in fact, it may have been THE first game i got. The game had been out for a while already, so I actually bought the 'Titanium Trilogy' version, a bundle of MW2 and it's too expansions, 'Ghost Bear Legacy' and 'Mercs.' The Titanium version was fairly new at the time.

I must say that it remains one of the most played games I ever owned. If you are new to the Mechwarrior universe, this is a must-have game. But sadly, if you have played MW3 already, it becomes hard to settle for this game again. I still play it sometimes just for the storyline, but the graphics and play control are second-rate compared to it's sequel, MW3.

5.0 out of 5 stars All systems nominal, February 24, 2012
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: MechWarrior 2 (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
In my opinion this is the greatest game ever made.

Many years ago, this was my first introduction to online gaming when my friend Cyberpup bought me a Kali subscription and he and I set forth, first in the Registry and subsequently the Killing Zone, as members of Comstar.

Let me tell you of the days of high adventure!

Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did with his mech. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Lackland the Primus, Cyberpup and me, Monsignor Fiat Lux,
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And the name "Mech Warrior 2" shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he that shed his blood with me in Comstar
Was my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This game hath gentle'd his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us on Netmech.

They sent me Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries, which I already own......I wanted to collect the actual original Mechwarrior 2 but now I don't have it, and I have 2 copies of Mercenaries. Both are very very good games, which is why I want both of them....

5.0 out of 5 stars Superior gameplay compared to modern Mechwarrior games, March 16, 2004
By
This review is from: MechWarrior 2 (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
Mechwarrior 2 is one of the best games, ever. The gameplay and flexability more than makes up for its lack of modern graphics, which in reality aren't that bad.

Weapon setup of your Mech is not limited to certain weapons in certain parts of the mech, and tayloring your joystick setup is the best I've seen in any game. It even allows you to use two joysticks for control, which simplifies ground movement and flight control making you one deadly pilot. There are many more controls compared to Mechwarrior 4, including the ability to jump and fly in all directions. (You can only jump in MW4, which isn't nearly as cool)

There is less time wasted with storyline and more to-the-point gameplay. The single player missions can get pretty intense as you have to take on multiple objective missions against pretty nasty odds, especially in the later missions.

Multiplayer includes some pretty slick missions. There is your usual deathmatch, as well as "capture the information" (capture the flag basically, requires you to raid your opponents base), king of the hill (cool, and very tough!), invasion (take over your enemy's base), and more. Multiplayer also has mission areas not accessable to the single player mode.

This game dispite its age puts Mechwarrior 3 and 4 to shame. What they gain in graphics they lose bigtime in mech setup and game controls. In MW2 you have the freedom to put whatever weapons wherever you want in the mech. Also you can put jumpjets on any mech you want. Other command controls don't require multiple keystrokes, just one key and you've found your enemies, friends, nav points, etc.

I highly recommend MW2 and its expansion pack, Ghost Bear's Legacy. GBL includes more mechs and missions. MW2 Mercenaries is a great game as well with improved graphics, sounds, and weapons. While it doesn't support dual joystick gameplay, it functions very well with a joystick and mouse. (it beats being limited to a keyboard hands down, take that MW3!)

You can get all three with much improved graphics in the Titanium Trilogy.
