5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best textbooks available
I read this book in preparation for my Ph.D. Qualifying Examinations in Materials Science Engineering. It is one of the best textbooks I have ever read, and the only one I have read from cover to cover. The material is covered at an even pace, with lots of equations and figures to help the text. The page layout is great with text, figures, and other data spaced evenly...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good for Undergrad, Maybe Okay for Graduate
I had this book for MAE160 at UCSD. This book isn't good for undergrad because the material is so scattered. Since it's graduate and undergraduate level, you will not cover a lot of things in undergrad classes, which makes it not clear what to cover. Also, no answers or solutions to the provided problems, which make it difficult to verify that you're doing it correctly...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good for Undergrad, Maybe Okay for Graduate, June 12, 2009
I had this book for MAE160 at UCSD. This book isn't good for undergrad because the material is so scattered. Also, no answers or solutions to the provided problems, which make it difficult to verify that you're doing it correctly. Overall I really dislike the book, but can see that it'd be useful if you read it FRONT TO BACK and really combed through the material. It's written more like a series of research papers then like a nice Prentice-Hall textbook.

This review is from: Mechanical Behavior of Materials (Hardcover)
I read this book in preparation for my Ph.D. Qualifying Examinations in Materials Science Engineering. It is one of the best textbooks I have ever read, and the only one I have read from cover to cover. The material is covered at an even pace, with lots of equations and figures to help the text. The page layout is great with text, figures, and other data spaced evenly throughout. The book is easy enough for undergraduate students to read, yet it contains enough data for practicing engineers to use as a reference.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful text, November 2, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The treatment of most topics in this text is qualitative at best, not the quantitative, rigorous analysis that top materials engineering programs expect. The text also has some glaring errors in mathematical manipulations and very little explanation of what the authors are trying to do, which makes it harder to catch mistakes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Adequate, March 11, 2011
So its a text book. Since its materials it is full of empirical equations. However, it doesn't need to be this boring. There are basically two types of text books. Ones that are meant to impart information to you, and this type which are very hard to understand because the author feels that his/her subject should be above most levels of understanding. I think its worth buying because its cheap and has tons of info, but it's written like someone didn't want to put the work into making it interesting.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hmm! Wonder how the book really is?, February 13, 2011
I personally like the book on "Mechanical Metallurgy" by George Dieter. This textbook is OK, and does not quite compare.

There also seem to be a lot of reviews around October 24-26 from Prof. Meyer's students. Hope these reviews are all "kosher" - otherwise this could be fraudy!

5.0 out of 5 stars great textbook, October 26, 2010
This book is great for mechanics student no matter in undergraduate or graduate. It covers all basic concepts which gives me a comprehensive view in this field.
The equations are expressed in succinct way that let me easily get into its fundamental physical meaning. And the example/problem also improve the ability to use these concepts. It is also good for doing the research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best text book in my entire school life, October 26, 2010
I've used this text book for one of the mechanical behavior of materials class I've taken during my undergraduate year. It was the most helpful text book ever.
and even as a graduate student now in the materials science program, I am still referring to it all the time.
If you really take the time to read through the text book, you will find every derivation helpful and complete. It's the book that has all the answers to your questions.
I would definitely recommend this text book to all students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, October 26, 2010
This is a greatest textbook I have ever read which cover a lot of materials from basic to advanced. I used this book not only for the class but also for the qualify exam. Some errors have been corrected and more additional interesting information has been added in the latest edition. I learn a lot from this textbook and strongly recommend this textbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good textbook, October 26, 2010
It covered enough data and knowledge for new coming engineering student. Especially if you major in mechanical or material science, this book has far more than enough information for your research or your job in the future.
