Book Description

February 17, 2003 0521801656 978-0521801652
A greater use of composite materials in many areas of engineering has led to a greater demand for engineers versed in the design of structures made from such materials. This text offers students and engineers tools for designing practical composite structures. Among the topics of interest to the designer are stress-strain relationships for a wide range of anisotropic materials; bending, buckling, and vibration of plates; bending, torsion, buckling, and vibration of solid as well as thin-walled beams; shells; hygrothermal stresses and strains; finite element formulation; and failure criteria. More than 300 illustrations, 50 fully worked problems, and material properties data sets are included.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...the book is a uniquely successful sythesis of writing. On the one hand the book is written clearly, with practical users in mind. On the other hand, the text is complete and is based on sound fundamental principles...this comprehensive book has not just become either a collection of formulae or lengthy derivations...It also resulted in numerical examples that not only illustrate solution techniques but shed light on the underlying principles." Journal of Computational and Applied Mechanics

"Overall, the book will be of practical use to final year undergraduate enginering students, researchers on composites and practicing engineers seeking to acquire knoledge of mechanics of composite materials and of their applications." The Aeronautical Journal, C. Soutis

Book Description

An increase in the use of composite materials has led to a greater demand for engineers versed in the design of structures made from such materials. This book is one of the first to demonstrate advanced concepts or emphasize structures. Among the topics of interest to the designer are stress-strain relationships for a wide range of anisotropic materials; bending, buckling, and vibration of plates; bending, torsion, buckling, and vibration of solid and thin walled beams; finite element formulation; and failure criteria. 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference! (Even if the notation is a bit insane), October 30, 2010
This review is from: Mechanics of Composite Structures (Hardcover)
This book has proven to be incredibly useful and is one of the most complete references I own. It covers the basics as well as what I'd consider to be advanced topics. Recently I've used it as a reference to verify methods for: i) stiffness of a built-up orthotropic open beam section made up of varying laminates; ii) orthotropic plate buckling (long/short & varying boundary conditions); and iii) buckling of open-section orthotropic beams (flexural-torsional, lateral-torsional & local). The book often does a better job of explaining the behaviour than my "approved" methods sources. That's why I decided to write this review.

One word of warning, his notation doesn't always match what I'm used to. The author seems to have a love of squiggly Greek characters, and doesn't hesitate to use them in place of more common notation (common being what's used in MIL-HDBK/CMH-17 and most other references I've used).

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT reference book, September 18, 2011
This book is simply great ...the initial 3-4 chapters covers the complete fundamentals needed for the composite study and the remaining chapters deals with all the particular structural problems encountered. I used this book for my thesis work.

The best part of this book is the compilation method. The boxes in between the sections is one of the very good summarizing practice. Also the appendix content help a lot in understanding the problem and the mechanics. According to me this is one of the most complete book in terms of the theory of mechanics of composite materials.
