Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The integration of electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, control and computer engineering – Mechatronics – lies at the heart of the innumerable gadgets, processes and technology without which modern life would seem impossible. From auto-focus cameras to car engine management systems, and from state-of-the-art robots to the humble washing machine, Mechatronics has a hand in them all.

This book presents a clear and comprehensive introduction to the area. Practical and applied, it helps you to acquire the mix of skills you will need to comprehend and design mechatronic systems. But it also goes much deeper, explaining the very philosophy of Mechatronics, and, in so doing, provides you with a frame of understanding to develop a truly interdisciplinary and integrated approach to engineering.

New to this edition:

  • An expanded first chapter gives a comprehensive introduction to the subject.
  • More in-depth discussion of op-amps, mechanisms, and motor selection to improve clarity and extend applications.
  • A new Appendix on Electrical Circuit Analysis is included to make the basic methods used for both d.c. and a.c. circuit analysis easily accessible to readers.
  • Updated resources for instructors available at www.pearsoned.co.uk/Bolton

Mechatronics is essential reading for students requiring an introduction to this exciting area at undergraduate and higher diploma level.

Don't buy this book if it's not required for a course. If it you must buy it, I hope you have other books covering the same topics. For the parts of this book which I understand, it is riddled with mistakes and full of half-explanations where it explains something simple then shows other things added to it and doesn't explain them. For the parts of this book which I'm trying to learn, I have no idea where the mistakes are or where I don't understand something because I have to think about it more, or whether it's only half-explained. Whoever was on the team responsible for this book, they are horrible people.

This book is an excellent survey of mechatronics.
While other books tends to focus on either one of mechanical or electrical perspective,
this book is extremely well-balanced on mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering perspective.
One of the few books that uses truely multidisciplnary approach!
The chapter layout is very nice, too.

Some people claim that this book is too shallow.
I agree it is shallow, but I believe it MUST be shallow.
Otherwise, it will easily go over 1500 page, become an encyclopedia rather than an intro-level textbook.
To truly learn mechatronics, you need one book for EACH chapter.

This is very good book for both self-learning and reference.
Once you finish this book, you will see what you need to study outside your major.

I can only rate the quality of the book, not the content as it is not for me, it is my son's Engineering text book and was specified for his course. The book was very well priced, was brand new as stated, arrived quickly and was in perfect order - well packaged.
It must be a good read tho'as he is the only one so far on the course with the book and everyone is queueing up to borrow it - time they got their own from Amazon!!
