Great games of the last decade, March 18, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mechwarrior 2 - 31st Century Combat (DOS) (CD-ROM)
I'm not a gamer, mostly because I find so few games that I think are worth playing. MW2 is so far off the charts that it caught my attention. This delightful game was the first to introduce full 3D (including character models, etc.) real-time graphics. It had active sound panning, was written to run at resolutions of up to 1024x768 with paletted 24-bit color, and had a soundtrack that many still listen to today, despite having moved on from the game itself. All in all an absolute gem for its time.
What's equally impressive is how well it stands up to the games of today. Complicated missions whose objectives change in the middle of heated battles, very varied environments, stunningly good controls, and the list goes on. If you've never played the game before and you're used to games from the modern era of graphics cards, you might appreciate the Titanium edition of this game rather than the DOS version; it's hardware accelerated, has textured geometric landscapes, ambient lighting, and various other changes that might ease the transition. For me, however, the DOS version will always reign supreme, and if you like the Titanium version you might want to give the DOS version a try. It's better in ways that matter. :)

IT STILL ROCKS !, December 28, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mechwarrior 2 - 31st Century Combat (DOS) (CD-ROM)
I first bought this game back in 1996/97. I played it for hours and really got into it. Loved it. Then moved onto MechCommander, then MCGold. But always found time to go back and play Mecwarriow 2. Years later I loaned my only copy to a friend...and of course it never came back. As years went by I forgot about the game. As I browsed Amazon, I came across MW2 and as I still have a functional old win98/DOS crate, I thought how much fun it might be to replay the old game, and purchased a reasonably priced copy of it( $19.95). It is even MORE fun 10+ years after not playing the game. I sure do wish Activision would re-release some of their old games to work on the XP/VISTA platforms; I believe there are enough old gamers out there, and maybe new ones, to make it cost effective. It amazes me how much some people want for the game, and how much they will pay. This goes to my statement about re-release.If you have an older computer get this game. you'll love it.
