Half decent score.,

Too many excellent video game scores are overlooked these days. The day of the midi-based level music is well in the past. And Mechwarrior 4 has one of the cooler video game soundtracks outside of techno/remix albums.
Duane Decker has created a score that sounds like it's the above average score of a trashy action movie. Seriously, many parts of it echo Frederic Talgorn's score for Delta Force 2. The rest sounds like Terminator 2 and Star Trek. Of course Decker does have some original stuff in there and manages to create some awesome moods and feelings outside of the action tracks. The action tracks are actually very, very cool but still not classy enough to be worth more than 3/5 I'm afraid (there is not much in the way of innovative orchestra use). And I must disagree with the other reviews here that say the score isn't MEANT to be listened to and only heard during the game. This isn't true and Decker and the Varese Sarabande executive even mention this in the (relatively extensive) liner notes. Mechwarrior 4 has some great themes and for a keen soundtrack collector it's well worth buying.

Good Stuff for gamers,

This is a great CD for role-playing games or the like. It is also, as a friend of mine put it, "Drive Faster music" if played in a car. Most of the individual tracks have a feeling of grim purpose to them and others are actually quite peaceful. There's a lot of short and sweet tracks and a few good longer pieces as well. I disagree with the reviewer who said that it was not meant to be listened to. I've been enjoying it in my walkman for the last few days, enjoying every minute. Some of the music is derivative of other soundtracks. The opening track contains enough elements of star trek themes that my friends swore that they were listening to star trek when they heard it at first, and the track ends with a petty blatant rip of Terminator 2's theme. Having said that, it is a very good derivative!

The Best Game Soundtrack Since MW 2,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance (Audio CD)
While not a worshiper of the MW series, I do have an appreciation of good Theme music, and MW4 V soundtrack is with out a doubt one of the best game soundtracks ever produced. This has everything form Orchestration to screaming metal guitars. Two words Buy it.

Very inspirational military sci-fi music. I listen to it while drawing for role-play games, CCGs and writing. This is an excellent soundtrack that stands alone very well. Each track is 'meaty' and well composed. Excellent to role-play by, or to listen to while playing another game. Compares favorably to the HALO soundtrack, -another moody excellent body of work. M4 just proves that game soundtracks are masterpieces in their own right and as vital to a game setting/mood as the polygons that make up the visuals. An excellent addition to your playlist of CDs.

You tune to the games. And the MW4 soundtrack is no different. Duane Decker has really done the game justice with this excellent soundtrack that really captures the feeling of the game's grim campaign to restore hope. Listen to track 7 and feel that sad twinge as the final notes ring out, turning the planet over to the darkness of it captors. Or DFA, where you feel on the edge of combat, surging forward with weapons blazing. Even if you never played the game, the music tells the story... From tragic beginning to its dynamic end.

Good Background Music...which is not ment to be listened to,

As with most video games, with the exception of Squaresoft titles, the background music is designed to be just that...background music. My deffinition of background music is something that you can forget you're listening to. That's great when you are playing a video game ans ignoring the music, but it a waste of time to listen to by itself. Botom line: background music. Buy this is you want just that, or if you worship this game (in which case, there are many better games to worship)
