5.0 out of 5 stars Great read for someone interested in med school

This book tries to do too much.. You're better off getting a great basic science gem like "How to study in medical school" to help you conquer the basic sciences, and teaming that up with "Iserson's guide to getting into residency" to help with your 3rd/4th year of med school.

And plus it really makes you wonder when the lead author is the same author as "Law...

I bought this book with the hopes that it could be of some insight as to whether or not med school would be for me. After reading it, I can say that it was that and much more. Not only did I get what seems to be an acurate portrayal of what it takes to get into med school and the road to being a doctor, but also extremely practical ideas and tools to help be successful on every major step along the way. The writing was clear and concise and seemed to be geared towards an extreme usefulness for a serious med student or potential med student. I will be applying for med school and reading this book along the way to help me excel through it. I definitely recommend this book to anyone seriously considering med school or who is in med school and would like some useful pointers on how to choose your clinical rotations, pre-pare well for the USMLEs, apply for residencies, etc.

EDIT March 2010:

I am in my first year of medical school and I still fully endorse this book. I can finally say from the other side of the application, that it was very helpful in the application process. I have lent out this book to a number of friends interested in the idea of pursuing medicine and they seem to have appreciated the content as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A road map through medical school, July 25, 2006

Awesome Book! This book is part instruction manual and part personal account of the journey through the premed/med-school/residency world. It is everything you need to know and everything you were afraid to ask about what you are about to get into, or are into already. It is step by step from premedical programs to applications, and from "matching" to life after residency. The authors speak to real world issues of finances and family as well as the academics involved. I have just purchased a copy for my best friend on her way to her first year of medical school. No one contemplating, or even mildly interested in what it takes to prepare for and become a doctor should be without this book.

Book is actually a few years outdated to the med school process. Still good info but not if you need guidelines on the correct steps to take b/c that part is out of date.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative and family friendly, March 22, 2007
This review is from: Med School Confidential: A Complete Guide to the Medical School Experience: By Students, for Students (Paperback)
This book is great for the average medical school hopeful. It guides you through every step of the process from pre-med on. The best thing included was the chapter written by a wife of one of the students collaborated on this project. She explained what she went through as a loved one of a med student. Very valuable information. The only cons I have:

-It didn't include a lot of information for the non-traditional applicant

-Since it went through every step of the process, it wasn't very detailed

Other than that, a very good get-your-feet-wet if you're thinking of applying to med school.

And plus it really makes you wonder when the lead author is the same author as "Law school confidential" and "Business school confidential". Most of the information presented is vague and not always applicable. Stick with books written by MD's, such as "How to study in Medical School" or "How to excel in Medical School".

Recommended by a blog of a guy going to med school, this book is indeed the book to read if you're interested in going to med school. Forget jumbled and convoluted online information. This book is comprehensive in the experience of the pre med student, med student, and intern. It talks about and gives great tips on how to get in, how to survive, and how to.... survive, respectively.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and Quite Informative, August 26, 2006
This review is from: Med School Confidential: A Complete Guide to the Medical School Experience: By Students, for Students (Paperback)
This Is the Premier Reference Book For Anyone That Has A Deep Desire To Go to Med School. Each chapter covers all the question of the whats and hows: whether it be the dos and the donts, various scholarship programs, personal perspectives - from med students, various age groups enrolling &(including single mothers and over the age...); moreover, questions that the prospective med student is reluctant to ask. MED SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL will provide the basis and the info for med school.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Way to Gain Perspective, August 10, 2006
This review is from: Med School Confidential: A Complete Guide to the Medical School Experience: By Students, for Students (Paperback)
I am entering my junior year of undergrad and picked up this book while I was browsing a local book store. Im pretty set on going to med school but of course have my doubts. This book clearly tells the reader what to expect and what they should do to excell in every step from thinking about med school to what heppens after graduation. I plan on keeping this book with me throught my time in undergrad work and med school. The tips in this book sometimes seem intuitive after the fact, but just having this book to state it really helps. After reading I am even more excited about applying and going through medical school in the next few years. Highly recommend for anyone thinking about med school to those who are still in med school (better late than never) those who are thinking about business or law school should look into the editions made for those fields too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read if You're Thinking About Going to Med School, July 1, 2010

This review is from: Med School Confidential: A Complete Guide to the Medical School Experience: By Students, for Students (Paperback)
I wanted a book that explained the medical school process step-by-step. That includes the pre-med aspect, as well as applying, interviewing, but also what happens after medical school. This book details every step you must take. Although, it doesn't sugarcoat everything either. The authors explain all the difficulties from their own experience, for most, that would probably make them think twice whether or not they truly wanted to devote 12+ years of their life of learning alone. For me, though, the book only made me more determined to reach my goal of getting into medical school. I recommend anyone contemplating medical school to read this book. You won't be disappointed.

This review is from: Med School Confidential: A Complete Guide to the Medical School Experience: By Students, for Students (Paperback)
This book contained step by step procedures of all the components of getting into and surviving med school, residency, and a career. I loved this book, it gave me so much information that I didn't know before and is written in a very easy to read format. Great way to prepare for the years ahead of becoming a doctor.
