A speech therapist recommended this product to me, to assist my elderly mother in remembering daily tasks. I am very glad I bought it.

My mom, who has moderate Alzheimer's, lives independently but I visit her daily. She enjoys participating in activities at the facility where she lives, but she typically forgets to leave her apartment to go. I purchased this product as a tool for helping Mom remember her schedule. Each day during my visit, I set the alarms for the next 24 hours, including a few that recur daily. The voice-recording option allows me to refer specifically to the reason for the alarm, such as: "Hi Mom, it's 12:45 and time to leave for a music performance at 1 p.m."

The only glitch we've had in using the alarm Mom's ability to turn it off. This is a minor issue because Mom does successfully turn it off. But when she presses the red "alarm acknowledged" button, a voice recording continues: "Alarm Acknowledged. The next alarm is alarm number 4 at two forty-five p.m." This leads Mom to wildly start punching other buttons to make the alarm shut up, and these other buttons in turn prompt other recordings, such as the current time. She hates this, and it's really confusing to her, and I see her point.

But despite this annoyance, this product has been tremendously helpful in improving my mom's quality of life. She attends about 80 percent of her activities, whereas her average had been about 50 percent of the activities before we began using this alarm.

I would suggest this product for anyone helping a dementia patient to remember activities or medications, but I would also suggest you start using it before the person actually needs it, so that the user can become accustomed to it and incorporate into his or her routine without frustration, before a greater level of confusion affects its efficacy.

We bought this to use primarily for homeschooling, and it has been very helpful! It serves as a make-shift school bell to help the kids learn to follow a schedule better. We recorded Daddy's voice (since the kids already hear my voice all day long) saying things like, "First subject...Science" and "Lunch time!" I'm glad the clock comes with an adapter to plug it in. It has been worth the cost; we'd buy one again. I wish the alarm had a volume control, and eight alarm options instead of six, but other than that, I think it's great!

REVIEW EDIT: It was terrific while it worked! Maybe two full years worth of use is too much to expect, but the voice recording feature gave out, and I noticed a tendency for the time to run slow. Every few months it would be as much as 10 minutes off (with fresh batteries, AND the adapter plugged in). I'd love to buy this again if it were of higher quality.

WHAT I BOUGHT THIS FOR: I work at home and wanted something I could program to wake me every day with a voice reminder of what tasks or appointments I had scheduled for that day, not as a medication reminder. That said, I think this is a good product for what it's designed to do but needs some reworking.

WHAT INTERESTED ME: I liked the idea that the clock had a "loud" and "louder" setting. (I never did find the "louder," but that wasn't a deal-breaker for me.) I was especially attracted by the fact that I could program it to remind me of regular tasks at intervals throughout the day because I tend to get absorbed in my work and forget to move on to the next thing. I realized that this would require re-programming it each day, but as long as that wasn't difficult--and I assumed it wouldn't be, since the clock is intended as a medication reminder for elderly people with possibly not-great finger dexterity--I figured it would be acceptable.

The designers were obviously conscious of the needs of older people. The instructions are full, easy to read, and easy to follow. The top buttons ("Alarm Check," etc.) are large and colored, and thus easier for older and nearsighted people to read and work with, and the female voice that confirms the settings is loud enough to be understood by anyone except the hardest-of-hearing. However, the controls themselves are a bit complicated--on a scale of 1-5, 1 being "Piece of cake" and 5 being "Call the company and get help," I'd put these at 3-1/2. It took me several days before I got all the settings right and the clock worked properly (i.e., went off when it was supposed to). And the ease with which the top buttons can be pressed means that you'll get a voice confirmation even when you don't want one.

I purchased this to use as a pill reminder and for its clock function. So far I am extremely pleased with both functions. The talking clock that announces both time and date is very loud and clear and an unexpected addition. My own suggestion would be that the clock was luminous which would make it more functional at night but this is compensated for by a backlite button that illuminates the clock for 30 secs. The alarm function that allow you to record your own personal message is great! makes it extremely versatile beyond a medication reminder!. I am very please with this product and would highly recommend it once it proves to be well constructed and remains functional.
