Biggest Disappointment in a Long Time,
By Mark Trine (Philadelphia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Medal of Honor Rising Sun (Video Game)
I really feel like I wasted my money buying this game. MOH Frontline has been for over a year one of the few video games I actually love. Even after passing it on all three levels, I just keep returning to it again and again for nothing more than the thrill of the gameplay. It was filled with strategy and realism....and it was rather entertaining as well. The Nazis were quite amusing to watch and the sets were also great fun just to walk around in and experience. Even after a full year of playing, I still throw it into my console and have a go whenever I feel the urge. So I waited and waited for Rising Sun....here I though it would be as good or better than Frontline. Boy was I wrong. Within 4 hours I had finished the game. 4 hours! I paid fifty bucks for this game to finish it in 4 hours.....and worse....not have any interest at all in going back to unlock any bonus items or to challenge it at the hard level. Why? Well because all you do is just shoot people....and believe me, unlike the Nazis these soldiers are plain stupid. You feel like Rambo, simply massacring hundreds of Japanese as if you're invincible. And talk about extra health packs....I may have died a total of 5 or 6 times completing this whole game because for what little I was shot, I was able to gain back full health constantly. I left more than a fair share of health packs behind. In Frontline, conserving those health packs is integral to completing the missions...in Rising Sun they're just there more for decoration it seems. Speaking of decoration, what happened to the graphics? Frontline's graphics are far better. There are no outstanding puzzles or strategies to accomplish....no need to use your brain at all as in Frontline. You simply keep on moving forward massacring Japanese soldiers. It just keeps going and going like this. I found myself wanting to complete the missions more as a chore than a pleasure. I kept hoping I would get to the next mission and the game would take off and start being more fun. But no....after destroying an aircraft carrier the credits began rolling. My jaw dropped. That was it? Yes it was. That was it. The whole game in about 4 hours....and the only part I mildly enjoyed was shooting down Zeros. Even the end sequence is lame...you just watch a carrier blow up and then the credits roll. Are they kidding? Completely anti-climactic. There is only one thing that is new with this game....you get to shoot down aircraft. Oh, and you ride an elephant. Big deal. The weapons are boring as hell, you never get to use too many of them at once. Then they add this "feature" of being able to toss grenades with a seperate button. That seemed good at first, until you realize that unlike in Frontline, where you get to cook the grenade, as well as to vary how long you hold down the fire button in order to determine the distance of your toss, you only have two choices: a short throw and a long throw. And that's it. The grenades in this game are not at all as fun as in Frontline. And then there's the AI. Or lack thereof. The Japanese soldiers are boring as hell....all they do is shoot at you, and run up at you. At first you think, "Wow, this is so cool! I can't wait to see what else they'll do." But they don't. They just keep doing the same brainless attack. In fact, this whole game is spent waiting for it to get interesting, and then....well then it's over. Don't waste your money. Rent this game and see what I mean. If you already have Frontline, then you have no need to buy this waste of DVD space. And yet...here's the real kicker....this game is only halfway completed: They're planning a sequel for it next year. Well hats of to EA Games for being able to release a half-length game at a full length price! Don't give them the satisfaction.

As a fan of the MOH series (dating back to the 2 games produced for PSOne), this was definitely a game I couldn't wait to play. The problem was that I finished it in about a week (about 8 hours total). Some of the other reviewers have mentioned that Frontline is a longer game (19 levels vs 10 here), and I would add also a tougher game. Rising Sun begins with you aboard a US battleship in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and immediately puts you in the fray (as Frontline did with the storming of the beaches at Normandy). This first level is almost tutorial, giving you a chance to get a feel for the game without really taking any damage. I found the second board visually stunning with the planes swooping down around you, but after that, the other boards are just OK. While the boards are longer, it felt like there were fewer enemies to fight. I'm not exactly a true "gamer", but I don't remember really having any trouble. In fairness, part of cruising through this game may be due to the fact that there are mid-level saves in Rising Sun, which is a feature new to the MOH series. Conclusion? It's a game worth playing, but...if you haven't played Medal of Honor Frontline, buy that one first. And if you are a fan of the MOH series and finished Frontline, you may want to just rent Rising Sun.

I can't even express how hugely disappointed I am with this game, I don't even know where to start. For one thing it's total crap in comparison to Frontline. It's way too short (I've had for a little more than a week and have beat it on normal and hard), it's too easy (set at 'hard' is about as difficult as playing Halo on 'easy'), the AI is incredibly stupid, the design of the levels is just silly and there is no freedom of action (it resorts to invisible walls in the jungle if you try to go somewhere the game doesn't want you to). Not only is this game devoid of any improvements or original ideas they left out some of the better features of Frontline. Do not buy this game, you can rent it for a weekend if you must, that will be plenty of time to play all the way through it. BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Less than perfect game.,

Medal of Honor: Rising Sun is the newest game in a series of games that have won respect for the title "Medal of Honor." MoH:RS, however, fails to lives up to the previous titles of the series. The good things, however, I will touch on first. There are several new features in MoH:RS that ensure to make the game a lot more fun. Co-Op mode is a completely new add-on to the Medal of Honor series. I am happy to see the multiplayer now back on Playstation 2 as well. There is also the addition of the online multiplayer too. The online multiplayer isn't the greatest, compared to titles like SOCOM II. It lacks variety as there are only two game types: Deathmatch and Team deathmatch. From what I have seen the online mode is a little unstable right now and lag is common. The Headset feature is a nice little addon, but fails in comparison to that of SOCOM II and resembles some of the lagged chopiness of SOCOM I. MoH:RS features a nice little library of special features for those who have unlocked them all. The single player in this game is lackluster. I do have to say, the textures and detail on the weapons was excellent, but the environment was poor. There was hardly any detail put into the plants and most looked like green triangles and things of the sort. The single player is far too short, and hopefully things will be followed up by the release of MoH: Infiltrator (the second part of this 2 part series). The interactivity in the environments has also disappeared as well. You can no longer break plates by shooting them in this game, nor can you send a flood of steam into the room by shooting a pipe as could you in Frontline. The gun variety in this game is also poor, leaving you with the same basic guns for almost the entire game. Only two Japanese weapons are incorporated into this gamed, vs. the 4 or 5 German weapons in Frontline. The levels also lack variety, placing you in the middle of a jungle for most of the game (now this could be argued against because this is in the Pacific). The music score in this game is good, but still does not live up to Frontline (mostly due to the change of composers). However, the single player does offer a good insight into the war of the Pacific, and with the Letters from Home feature you can see what WWII was like on the homefront. If you are a big MoH fan, I suggest you get this game. It is an ok game for what it's worth, so renting the game first would be my reccomendation. However, if you're looking for a great, in-depth FPS, you came to the wrong side of Chinatown.

any one who reviewed this game as better than frontline must work for EA games. Anyone who reviewed this game as hard is either 4 years old or only has 1 arm, if they do not fit into one of these categories should immediately give away their game system, this is the easiest FPS I've ever played. Even on Hard the Japanese are such bad shots you can run up to them from a hundred yards away while they are shooting at your and club them down with your rifle. If they happen to hit you once or twice don't worry, there is health about every 50 feet in this game. don't buy this game, bad plot, bad levels, too easy, too short.

I am a huge MOH follower but this game is nothing short of a rip off. First of all it is too short I finished in one weekend, the graphics leave a lot to be desired with dead soldiers that seem to float. This game would have been worth $19.99 but at anything over that it is a rip-off

I'm not a big FPS games fan, but I got hooked on to MOH Frontline which I thoroughly enjoyed. So I bought MOH Rising Sun expecting it to be even better...what a let down it was! The game was way too easy and when it abruptly came to an end, I was very disappointed. The storyline and missions are not bad, but the level of difficulty and the dumb soldiers are ridiculous. The graphics are mediocre. In the single-player missions your comrades sometimes get in between you and the enemy, and your enemy can still shoot at you but you can't! I think two pluses for this game - it now costs only 15 bucks or so, and the game has save points all along the various missions (a big improvement over Frontline).

What Happened to MOH? Disappointed in Rising Sun,

I am a late convert to the Medal of Honor series. I've played them both on PC (Allied Assault and Spearhead) and xbox (Frontline). I had great expectations for Rising Sun but was soon disappointed when I got the game home and started playing. My overall impressions are that EA rushed through production of this game to hit the shelves in the holiday timeframe. The story starts of well enough with the attack on Pearl Harbor, and moving into the fall of the Philippines, but quickly falls into repetition after that. One jungle trail looks like the next, and there is no need to strategize, just load up and shoot anything that moves. The enemy AI is not a challenge, the graphics are terrible, the difficulty is minimum, It is very linear, point a to point b without much difficulty. When I finished the game, which took all of about a week, I didn't even realize it. I went up to the web to find out if my game was broken, or I wasn't doing something right. Way too short. Maybe I'm missing something, but a game you can complete in 1 week is not worth the $50. A great weekend rental. My guess is that you will be able to pick this one up cheap about a week after Christmas.....used!

A fun but ultimately disappointing release,
By A Customer
This review is from: Medal of Honor Rising Sun (Video Game)
Whilst Medal of Honor: rising Sun is an entertaining addition to the series, I think it will prove ultimately disappointing to fans of previous MoH games. The gameplay is not all that different from previous games, except (as many reviewers have commented)the game is much shorter and far too easy. I waltzed through the Pearl Harbor levels first time- it's hard to see how you could fail! In contrast the storming of the beaches level on Frontline took a while to conquer. For me the main disappointment is that the game appears to have been rushed. The graphics are actually pretty poor(there is no way they are superior to Frontline as some reviewers have written) and the game ultimately fails at giving the impression you are actually fighting in WW2. Much of the pleasure from Frontline came with your characters ability to interact with the environment (i.e. shoot pillows and feathers come out; shoot clock and cuckoos and springs pop out; windows smash) and amusing asides. In contrast Rising Sun does not have the detail and indeed much of the environment is poorly rendered and hard to see. Only the sound lives up to previous MoH editions. Overall MoH Rising Sun is a diverting game with some interesting levels but has failed to take the series a step forward. Gamers will probably be hoping that the superb "Call of Duty" makes a successful translation from PC to console by way of compensation.

High hopes but way too easy,

This game was highly anticipated, but sadly it falls short of what it could have been. First off, format wise, they throw in a Multiplayer mode, sadly missing from the PS2 version of Frontline. They also support online play. These features are great--the bots in Multiplayer can be tough. So what happened to the AI in the regular mode? Overall, the first player mode falls short. These EA shooters are all starting to look the same. I loved the Bond games, they were fun and captured the spirit of the movies. MoH Frontline was fantastic as well. Rising Sun has a lot going for it, but sometimes feels like they just got lazy. For one, the game is very easy. I finished this game in about two days, effectively. There is very little strategy involved, and the computer AI is plain bad. The Japanese soldiers are, of course, lousy shots, and at times will just charge right into the barrell of your gun. The game gives you computer controlled teammates so you can fight side by side, but as can be expected, that AI is pretty awful, making the feature useless. Your partners are bumbling buffoons. I also found myself running around certain boards trying to figure out where to go and what action to perform, something that rarely happened in the first one or in the Bond games. The graphics are very good, the sound is awesome, but there are some things missing. There is hardly any interaction with the surroundings aside from what you must do to finish a board. It may seem like a small thing, but it's just lazy. You can't open any doors except for ones that are essential to you finishing a board. You can't break random things and shoot up rooms, something that both the Bond games and Frontline had. There are some new features, such as the opening bit of manning a carrier gun during the Pearl Harbor attack and shooting down 0 fighters, or riding an elephant. But again, it's all way too easy. Matter of fact, I actually couldn't believe I finished the game when I did, the last mission hardly offers a challenge for a first person shooter. And the Pearl Harbor opening is nowhere near as tough or as new as the D-Day landing of the original. I dropped fifty bucks on this game when it came out, and the only reason I'm not selling it back used is the multiplayer option, which still doesn't make it a great value. I think MoH fans will find a lot to like, but the game could have been much better. You have more weapons, and some great looking boards, including very realistic jungles. I did find myself getting lost on boards and getting frustrated because of the layout, but in the end, like the original and like Bond, the game just guides you through the missions on autopilot. Even timid first person shooter fans will finish this game in no time. Of course, the game is bloodless and carries a teen rating, which is a shame. I don't understand why they try to sanitize a WWII game, but it's EA, and I guess they want a bigger market. I'm hoping the 3rd person Bond game next year will be a lot better. I was looking forward to this, now I need to go out and buy something with a little more replay value. |
