5.0 out of 5 stars thankfully, they didn't screw up a good thing, December 13, 2000

The 1st Medal of Honor was such a great game. Especially for anyone interested in the history of the time, or more partial to a deeper game than your average Unreal frag-fest and such. And the perfection was that not only did the movie-style presentation strike a chord with novices and experts alike, the game wasn't really that hard to complete. All it took was time, and perhaps some luck. Thankfully, they have revived the series with MOH:Underground, and blissfully, they infused it with the exact same spirit and atmosphere that made the first one such a winner.

Gripes? Not any that would influence a purchase. But there are some nit-picky things. Graphics could be clearer, hit detection could be improved so you don't get hung up on a simple doorway. The enemies are a bit too accurate sometimes, and I hope you don't ever have the misfortune of walking past one, only to have him pop up behind you and tear you to pieces at point-blank range. Why do the Nazis love to jump out of open windows? If you've ever played a city portion of this game, you'll see what I mean (watch the oversized lit windows!)

But the good far outweighs the bad. And adjustable difficulty means you can set the challenge to suit your taste. And beware the difficulty! The game starts off fairly innocently, but once the background info tells you to "Be Careful, Manon!" you had better heed their warning!

This time around, the levels tend to be more maze-like, resulting in ample backtracking. It is fun to have an allied operative along with you in a few missions. Coming face to face with Panzer tanks is an experience! As is getting the chance to ride in a sidecar down a mountain road, blasting Nazis out of your way the entire journey (those guns NEVER run out of ammo!)

Long story short, it's a top-notch game. Especially if you liked the first one. Here's to sequels that AREN'T disappointments!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fight Continues!, November 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Medal of Honor Underground (Video Game)
If you remember the previous problems of MEDAL OF HONOR, like horribly choppish graphics and just some pesky peeves. Then forget em' all. MOH2 is all newly refined featuring more powerfully geared engines. Like riding a motorcycle and firing from it, and having your Frech Resistance allies next to you in the fight.

The enemy AI is stunning with new abilities like jumping over walls, to guarantee a new approach every time you play.

The new weapons consist of crossbows, Molotov Cocktails, and a Panzerfaust. Plus a camera when you go undercover as a NAZI propaganda photographer. Where the enemies stike hilarious poses to keep you laughing for hours.

THE STORY

Once again you are a WWII OSS undercover agent working against those stinky NAZIS. In MOH remember the girl that briefed you before missios? Well you play her in the game, but it is a prequel because this was before she escaped from Occupied France to america. So Jimmy Patterson has not even been found by the OSS yet. You have to fight your way through france as a member of the frech resistance fo the freedom of every man and woman alive.

Are you ready to rise above the call of duty?

5.0 out of 5 stars Vive La France!! (and this game too!!), October 30, 2000

WOW!! The guys at EA did it again! Forget the notion that sequels never live up to the original. MOHU doesn't skip a beat as compared to the first MOH. The idea of playing a female French Resistance agent is a fresh notion, and it provides an excellent game premise. As Manon, you begin as a lowly French Resistance fighter in Paris. Shortly after that, you get recruited by the American OSS (WWII version of the CIA), who provides you with the chance to visit exotic locales and cripple Hitler's war machine by covert (and sometimes not so covert) means. The game designers really did their homework when researching weapons and theaters of operations. However, there are a few slight mistakes. First, German troops did not use the British Sten 9mm sub-machinegun. Panzerfausts (that are used in the early game levels) did not come until later in the war, German hand grenades would not kill a Panzer IV tank, (unless you were really lucky), and what the heck is a "Big Joe Crossbow?" But, they did make the heavy German machine guns look like MG42s, unlike the American .30 caliber M1919 in MOH. Also, you get to use old WWI-vintage Hotchkiss M1914 machine guns, which were prized by the French freedom-fighters during the war. Choices in weapons are really good, and it adds more flavor to the game. My personal favorite is the STG44 "Sturmgewehr" assault rifle. Also, the new "disguise" feature is very slick. With this new feature, you assume the role of a German propaganda photographer. When soldiers let down their guard for a goofy pose, you have a second or two to pop them in the skull with your suppressed pistol. Graphics can be grainy at times, and up close, enemy troops look simply awful. The cure for that is don't let 'em get that close!! Seriously, the Playstation is showing it's age, and this game really squeezes everything out it can. Controls are the same as MOH, so old vets will have no trouble tackling the Third Reich. Sound and music is just as good (if not a little better) than MOH, and the missions are just as challenging and pulse-quickening. However, the Germans are better shots this time, so be ready to duck and return fire quicker. All in all, this is great game, and MOH vets are again in for a wonderful treat.
