Book Description

The Medallion October 7, 2009
A medieval fantasy set in Britain, follows Alana and Anwen, sisters from a peasant family in a small farming village. Life is peaceful until raiders attack and burn the hamlet to the ground, murder their parents and leave the girls to survive on their own. Anwen rescues the mysterious medallion carved with unfamiliar symbols, which once belonged to a wizard. Raiders capture, rape and enslave Alana, ultimately selling her to another criminal. Sick and broken she finally escapes and ends up at an inn where she begins to see a glimmer of hope for a better future. Anwen struggles to her grandmother's village where she is trained in the healing arts. She is tormented by visions of her sister in the hands of the raiders. Later she begins to suspect the medallion has powers that will help her find Alana. She goes on a quest to discover what the symbols mean. Will Anwen discover the secret? Will Alana find happiness after years of struggling? Will the sisters be reunited?

More About the Author

Sunni Morris was born in Houston, Texas. Most of her life was spent on the farm south of there except for the summer she spent with her grandmother in California. That summer instilled in her the desire to move there which she did later in her adult years. This was after spending five years in Alaska and two years in Oregon.

The author is the oldest of seven children. She played the role of teacher and adviser to her siblings and was forever the artist, story teller and game creator or simply the paper doll maker as activities were constantly looked for to keep everyone entertained and occupied.

While living in California she began to take her writing seriously and joined a writers group. At this time she started work on her first novel. Today she is always working on a story of some kind if she isn't reading or sewing.

Her office is filled with books and she's a collector of faeries. They sit on the shelves among the books and inspire her to write magical tales filled with wizards, witches, ghosts, faeries and talking animals.

The author's first novel, Haversham Hill is not the usual ghost story. This book was an entrant in the ABNA 2007-2008 contest. It was published in May 2008.

The author's second novel was just published in October 2009. Sunni Morris has always wanted to write a medieval story. She finds that period in history quite fascinating with upheavel that can change things in a instant. The author is also an avid fan of all the King Arthur tales. The Medallion - Book One - The Prophecy is a story about two sisters born to peasants who get separated during childhood. The author had a lot of fun putting this on paper and tried to keep it as true to the time period as possible by doing extensive research. She has plans to continue this story.

Also in the works is a children's book of faery tales and magical stories which should be out this spring.

There will also be a book of childhood tales, recipes, anecdotes, etc. about growing up on a cotton farm in the 1950's. This book will be written in collaboration with one of the author's sisters. Stay tuned.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Fantasy, December 13, 2009
This review is from: The Medallion: Book One - The Prophecy (Paperback)
This is an exciting medieval fantasy, set in Britan, which is my favorite setting for fantasy novels. This book reminds me of The Mists of Avalon, with descriptions of the countryside.

A very good read. Reccomended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful lyric writing, February 1, 2010

This review is from: The Medallion: Book One - The Prophecy (Paperback)
The Medallion has a fairytale quality, a story within a story in the style of Second Hand Lions, the Princess Bride, or Inkheart. Like The Princess Bride, it is set in a semi-fantasy, semi-Medieval world; this particular world is teeming with bandits, a mysterious medallion, a mischievous fairy trying hard to be less so, an enigmatic Lady, and wizards, moving in and out among the ordinary peasantry just trying to survive and make sense of the hardships of life. The story, as told by a mysterious old man, centers on two sisters torn apart by bandits in their youth. One sister finds a semblance of happiness and, eventually, a mysterious and great destiny waiting for her, while the other suffers greatly, but never gives up her dream of finding her sister.

The story opens with a narration in an almost fairy-tale style that promises something magical and mysterious to come, and sets the stage. The language is beautiful, with a rhythm and poetry that echoes the mysterious, dreamlike, fairy-tale beauty of the story itself. I found myself wanting to read slowly and savor every word and lush image, even as I wanted to race ahead and find out what happens.

What attracted me most to The Medallion was the lyric and poetic writing style. The book is worth reading for that alone, with descriptions as lush and beautiful as the Lady's island. You can see the dew drops on each leaf, and feel the grass under your feet. But lovers of fantasy and medieval times will also love the setting, and the elements of adventure and romance, as Anwen and her sister Alana, separated years ago by an attack of bandits, spend years hoping to find one another even as their lives unwind.

The book ends with one mission accomplished, but the good feeling that there is plenty of story left in these characters, and plenty more adventures waiting for them and for their readers. I look forward to the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Medallion Book One of the Prophecy, June 30, 2010

This review is from: The Medallion: Book One - The Prophecy (Paperback)
This medieval fantasy really sets the tone in language, setting and story - even the food and drink are true to the period. The author seems to have thoroughly researched this age and it is reflected in this novel. You care about the fate of the two sisters and many of the secondary characters as well. The book is full of magic and wonder, with enough action to move it smoothly along. Readers of Marion Zimmer Bradley and Ursula le Guin will enjoy this book. I am looking forward to Book Two in this series.
